Come on fella, there was a massive furore over Boris and his funding and rightly so. Starmer has to be better I meant on here, from the people lambasting Starmer? Y’know, I don’t for one second think that anyone can get us out of the hole we’re in comfortably, most of the Western world is the same to varying degrees. We all want want want for as cheaply as possible, then look for someone to blame when it isn’t possible. The thing that needs to change is our collective greed…this was fed through the many Tory years, with narratives spun that it was immigrants and benefit scroungers taking ALL of the money, when a good percentage was being creamed off by them & their mates. What we need is an honesty; to know any new leader isn’t about to allow this again, and unfortunately this misstep is the first chink in Sir Kiers armour. I just searched for wallpaper as it seemed a unique word to see if anyone was bashing him for that on 'ere. First wallpaper search found from 2020 was Phantom who is now trying to make excuses for Starmer doing the same thing. Guess we all have our 'hard choices' to make

An indication of what is absurd about the renumeration of public servants:
Director of Public Prosecutions- £226k Prime Minister - £167k
£167k is not to be sniffed at but for the role one that impacts us all it does seem a tad low, understand there are perks but for a 24hr, 7 Day a week job we are fortunate that some people are prepared to take on the role and it does explain why most have already attained wealth or had to before they came into frontline Politics.
Does not defend the hypocrisy and naivety of accepting the gifts, definitely a misjudgement and as we are in the vacuum while we wait for the Budget newspapers require news and all we have now is conjecture not helped by the dullest conference speech that I can remember where nothing could be said as it would preempt the Budget, it needs to be a zinger to take back control of the narrative.

Yep good post. But it is also the messaging coming out about the hard choices we have to make in the budget that makes these freebies even more unforgiveable for a Labour leader and his party

Guessing the DPP job doesn’t come with 2 taxpayer properties?

Why does having a moral compass make you a fool? It's quite straightforward. If anyone gives you anything for free or for a knock-down price in life, you ask yourself a simple question: would they have done the same thing if I did not have the job/power/influence that I do? If the answer is yes, it's a genuine gift, so enjoy; anything else, you should return with a polite thanks but no thanks. Maybe I’m a bit naive, but somebody giving me gifts wouldn’t change my opinions or belief system. While it's possible for some people to consciously ensure they're scrupulously fair, they could never prove that were the case if they have accepted gifts/hospitality, and would make it impossible for others to differentiate between them and the truly corrupt. It all adds to the stench of favouritism, cronyism, perceived wrongdoing and actual wrongdoing. Moreover, no human is immune from unconscious bias. Even if we accept your contention that you are an exception, any conflict-of-interest rules designed to protect against such bias cannot reasonably have exemptions. It is mind boggling that we are at a stage where it is considered acceptable for an MP to accept gifts, etc. so long as they are declared. No, it's not acceptable; declaring them changes little. It's right that Starmer is held to far higher account than others, as he made a virtue of being the person who would change politics in this regard. However, while many of his declared freebies are suspect, I don't have an issue with the Arsenal tickets. Given he's continuing to pay for his family's season tickets, accommodating Starmer and his family in a more secure area of the ground seems entirely reasonable for anyone subject to heightened assassination risk. The greatest abuse of power that this leader (and his predecessors) exploit is the granting of access and favourable policy to media moguls. Starmer's u-turn on Leveson 2 following meetings with Murdoch et al is outrageous and abhorrent. The mouth-frothing journalists in the right-wing press have been quiet on that.

A politician who has the power to make the laws of the land accepts expensive gifts. Some may suspect that this could be by virtue of his office. How should he be treated?

Something to think about perhaps.

Media seems to be selecting its particular angles from a smorgasbord of choices in Duffield's letter, inc. 'cruel choices', 'hypocrisy' and 'leadership'. Autumn Statement is 4 weeks away - I admire Duffield's independence of mind (see Trans issue) but really now - maybe she wants to join Jeremy Corbyn's merry band of independents before it becomes less plausibly principled (to leave Labour) ..

Duffield is not close to the Corbyniste faction. Indeed she is a friend of Israel and thus never likely to share a platform with Corbyn et al.

She was very pro ceasefire in about March, and not a friend of Israel.
Have you got a link supporting what you say from this year?

Her Wikipedia lists her as a member of Labour Friends of Israel. It is possible to be that and to call for a humanitarian ceasefire www.mpwarcrimes.co.uk/parliament/rosie-duffieldThat seems to paint a rather different picture Either way I see no evidence of any closeness to the Corbyn wing. Look at Nadia Whitome's reaction to her resignation on X to see how Duffield is viewed by that wing.

www.standard.co.uk/news/politics/home-secretary-yvette-cooper-taylor-swift-concert-met-police-labour-b1186969.html This time free tickets after allegedly pushing for the pop star to receive a police escort through London “ Ms Cooper and London Mayor Sadiq Khan spoke to the Metropolitan Police to encourage them to give the megastar a "VVIP escort" through London for her Wembley Stadium concerts. The Met were reportedly reluctant to sign it off as a blue-light escort is typically reserved for senior members of the Royal Family and high-level politicians, as it comes at huge expense to the taxpayer, The Sun reported” Funny how Sadiq Khan can open his gob for Taylor Swift Yet happily oversaw more tube strikes than Boris Johnson did in his time as mayor and increasing knife crime Perhaps he should push The Met in the right departments

The woman just had to cancel her gigs in Vienna because of a serious terrorist threat.
It is not unreasonable to increase the level of police protection to ensure a gig that has a major economic impact on the city does not get cancelled. We all remember the MEN bombing- it’s not like serious incidents have not happened here.
The MET can swallow their pride for the day. It’s obviously just snobbery that decides who gets the VVIP blue-light treatments, not threat level.

The star was given a police escort to the venue This was not for the people who attended the event It was for her safety not for the concert goers Please read information carefully in future

It is totally fair to provide further protection given that context, and a potential tendency for copycat attacks or attempts.

She was going to cancel the gig because she did not feel safe. This is a brown M&Ms situation. It’s not about the police escort. It’s about proving that the police were talking the security of the her and the gig-goers seriously. Edit: As we all know from the Prince Harry security situation, the MET do not *allow* people to pay for their VVIP protection services, even if the threat level is extreme and ongoing. So the ‘she could pay for it’ argument is moot. She would not have been allowed to, just like Harry isn’t.
