I'm taking it as a good sign that I've not heard of Adrian Zmed, must mean he's been cast on talent!!
And whilst I wasn't overly impressed with John Partridge in Chicago (though I thought he was bloody brilliant in The Drowsy Chaperone), I think he's a more than suitable choice of a 'name' but also a bona fide musical theatre performer. Well, compared to some other names I'd heard thrown about. Though I slightly anticipate his interpretation may be hammier than a ham hock, but willing to be proven wrong!
Maybe this will be good!!

Partridge's vocals are not great. His attempt at Billy Flynn was weak. Shame

John Partridge can do camp very well. Unfortunately it really didn't work as Chris in the first Miss Saigon tour!

There's so much more to him than that. That's why I think I'm glad I saw two Albin's in London before John Barrowman, as I could just let myself go with his silly-ness and camp-ness, but he certainly wasn't a 'proper' Albin and my opinion I'm sure would be different if Barrowman was the only Albin I'd seen. Though he was enough to get me back to that production for a 3rd time! |

Adrian Zmed, sigh - that thoroughly gratuitous shot they had of him in the opening titles of TJ Hooker with his top off. Sigh.

Although I gather the pronunciation doesn't quite fit, be prepared for reviews that manage to find some way to make use of the phrase "from Ade to Zmed".

Does anyone know if this will be "a la Menier" production? i.e. scaled down and more "real" than the original?
I've seen both and it's like night and day, the Menier production was a revelation with Douglas Hodge and Denis Lawson, totally changed my mind about this show. The original version just didn't work as well, it needs to be more intimate and bare'ish - if that makes sense.

A Bill Kenwright production will take "scaled down" to a whole new level. No doubt it will make the Menier production look like the London Palladium show. I can see the Cagelles sharing feathers and a couple of sequins between them and the La Cage Aux Folles nightclub consisting of a glitter ball, a bit of rostra and a few tables borrowed from Starbucks! Plus the delight that is John Partridge in the lead.
It's doing a 2 week stint in Brighton next August - I think it will struggle - the show has been done in Brighton many times with very good amateur productions.

I saw her in Tell Me On A Sunday a few years back. She doesn't have the range she used to, but the role isn't big vocally. She'll be great. She still has wonderful stage presence. |
