I'm pretty sure it hasn't been announced yet, but does anyone know if this is expected to be Summer 2021 or is it still just 2021 as a blanket statement? Really hoping to make it.

Well if this goes ahead and Jake is unavailable then I know someone who could step into his shoes. Ben Platt was asked on Instagram what show he would love to do and he said Sunday. I'd pay to see that.

I'd pay to see that. I suspect he would be good. BP is currently filming Merrily, playing Charlie. Good to see him stepping into Uncel Steve's repertoire 😍

Not sure how I feel about that. He'd sell tickets, but the seismic vibrato is grating.

I'm not a fan of Platt, certainly not someone I'd buy an expensive ticket to see.

Regardless of your opinion of your opinion of Ben Plat, since the success of Dear Evan Hansen, he's the flavour of the month.
Of the success of that he's released a solo album and performed many concerts. (For anyone interested) he's also outed himself.
As referred to above, he's currently filming Merrily We Roll Along and was tied to recreate his role in Dear Evan Hansen on screen to.
He's a busy man.

Ben Platt is undoubtedly good; so lucky to have seen him in DEH. However. I just don't see him as George.

Yeah Ben Platt's voice is not at all right for the role, too modern pop-style musical theatre and I know he isn't that young anymore (and definitely reads as too old for Evan Hansen but I have no interest in seeing the film so that doesn't affect me) I still feel like he looks too young to play George even though I imagine George probably wasn't even that old in real life at the time of the musical.

Looking at wikipedia the real Georges started the painting when he was 24 and it took him two years to finish it. He was only 31 when he died.

I figured as much, maybe the beard just ages him in my mind, but I still struggle to believe Ben could pull off the role.

I don't think that Ben Platt will be that much of a box office draw. Yes he has a fanbase, but they're mainly younger and it wouldbt be big enough to sustain a 8-12 week run,at the prices they're charging.
I also don't think he's old enough or has the vocal range, without resorting to his usual vocal ticks. His performance of Somewhere from WSS showed that.

Let’s be clear.. if Jake isn’t available to do this in London, it WONT be done at all. He is the sole reason they are trying to do this run.

Let’s be clear.. if Jake isn’t available to do this in London, it WONT be done at all. He is the sole reason they are trying to do this run. Agree. As a musical it's incredibly niche. Even with a star TBO. Remember the excitement on here when booking was announced and we (including me!) rushed to get a ticket, thinking was gonna be difficult to get one. Months later, the seating plans were still over 50% unsold. Get that it speaks to many fans, but I couldn't even make it to the end of the CD (almost unheard of for me with a musical; will give anything a go all the way through once) was such a difficult listen. Just sounded like random notes! No doubt I may have felt differently live. But in post Corona rationalisation and given the price I had coughed up, this was a clear refund for me. I'd be amazed if it happens in the first post Corona wave. Whenever that may be.

Now Josh Grobin would sell tickets as he has a much broader audience appeal and is well known outside of the MT circle. Plus, ready made beard!

He would be a brilliant George - if Jake couldn’t do it (a la Whoopi) I would be more than happy with Josh if that was a casting decision.

Yep, you’d get bonus Dan & Mrs attendance if they got Groban involved.
