I was able to watch this in the US even as the BBC website police have been pretty good at tracking down uploaded copies and taking them down. I was amused by most of it - although some of it went to the excesses I did not like in The Comedy About A Bank Robbery. I agree that farce doesn't translate as well to television. The immediacy and intimacy of the lunacy and "danger" is lessened. The camera also limits and focuses your view. I think I would have enjoyed it more in the theatre. But I'm very happy Mischief and the BBC did film this version and show it and I'm glad I was able to see it. I have friends and colleagues who have also been able to watch it here in the States - and they found it hysterical.

I was at the filming too and, although the audience reacted positively most of the time, it was all so stop-start, with scenes repeated and done out of sequence, that the full extent of the hilarity that takes place in the theatre just wasn't reached. The interactive bit I saw filmed ("he's behind you" - "stop it, it's not a pantomime!") was very forced and fell rather flat. I've been to many sitcom recordings in the past and this always happens. A lot of things which work extremely well on TV fall very flat in the room, and you are very conscious about "having" to laugh. I still stick by what I previously said - farces do not translate well onto TV, and the "put elements in which are appropriate to the medium" stuff was the best thing they could do. It was either that or record the theatre show in its entirety - but cutting the theatre show to a hour and not doing anything TV related would have seemed very strange I imagine. When I was just an egg....well a teenager they used to show Brian Rix farces from the Whitehall theatre on the telly from time to time. What a treat! And I think they just filmed it as it was front on, as it were, with the audience reactions. Does anyone know if they had to do all the repeating as described above and so on that they do now? If so, it was well done for the time.

High praise for the TV version from Clive James in today's Guardian. Lovely to read.

A great last show for Peter Pan Goes Wrong tonight, including possibly the strangest ever audience shout-out in the poisoning scene involving Richard Branson taking over the NHS! I do hope the show gets another revival next Christmas, or at least some other Christmas in the future. I'd hate never to see my favourite revolve again! ETA: cute overheard comment tonight. In the poisoning scene Harry passed the 2nd bottle to a young boy in the 2nd row who I was sitting in front of. In the blackout after Tinkerbell's electrocution a few minutes later I heard a small voice say "Did I do that?". After his brother replied in the affirmative he then said: "Dammit"! Front row, which is my usual spot for this show.

Those 2 kids were so cute, could just hear them in the middle of the blackout asking if they killed Tinkerbell.

^Ah, so that must be the mysterious secret project they keep tweeting about that was due to be announced yesterday. I thought it was likely to be something for TV & sure enough it evidently is.
ETA Can't see anything on the BBC's tickets webpage so I wonder if there will be a ballot for this one or if it'll be closed to the public?

Splendid, glad to hear it's coming back! Look forward to more dates being announced (I do wonder if Cambridge Arts were not meant to put these on sale yet..)

I did wonder that, given a quick look at the websites of a few other possible venues had no sign of it listed on there (infuriatingly it's coming to Cambridge while I'm on holiday so I'll have to see it elsewhere). However the Arts Theatre then tweeted about it the next day & the tweet's still there so if they have jumped the gun a bit then evidently it's being allowed to stand.

Is Nativity Goes Wrong ever going to get another airing? I have a vague memory of asking one of the writers, can't remember which, about it once & was told that they were hoping to re-work it into a 2 act pla at some point. However, given that was a couple of years ago, whether or not it's still on their to do list I don't know. They're probably more than busy enough with the TV series & Groan Ups at the moment.
