Lauren Samuels, Ashleigh Gray and Lizzy Connolly star in Vanities, a classic American musical making its European debut, running from 1st September - 1st October in Trafalgar Studios 2.
According to ATG:
Hmmm. I'm in London to see Allegro on 3rd September. May need to plan an overnight stay and slot a visit to this in then too with that cast!

So so excited for this. Have booked for the opening two nights and both shows on closing day too. All three ladies will be fantastic, especially Ashleigh I think.

I saw the original production of this at the Pasadena Playhouse in LA in 2008 - the same cast (Lauren Kennedy, Sarah Stiles, Annelise Vanderpol) then took it to New York a year later and recorded an OCR which is definitely worth checking out. It's based on a play that was a big off-Broadway hit in the 70s and the author of that play, Jack Helfer, wrote the book for the musical.
My memory of it is that I enjoyed it without it ever being anything special, but it has three great parts for singing actresses who age and change over a period of ten years - starting off in high school. Perhaps it's a bit dated now? Not sure. It will be interesting to see it again.

Checking my diary, I found I'm at "Perpetual Succour" at 5.30pm, so a 3pm of this works well - assuming they repeat the 90 minutes running time from Broadway. Taken a chance and booked a seat near the door, anyway. For £25 on that offer, you can't go wrong indeed. Thank you, Theatremonkey - such a helpful post, as the only day I could identify to see this was also before a 5.30 pm booking for Our Ladies, but I refrained from risking it as I didn't know the running time for Vanities. Now to see if there are still affordable tix left... |

The three acts are because the show takes place in three time periods - 1963 (high school, Texas), 1968 (uni, Texas), and 1974 (post school real world, New York). I believe that, when I saw it, the first two acts were played together. It's the third act that takes the big leap forward.

The Vanities Twitter account are on a question answering spree if you have anything you want to find out. I asked how many acts the play is in, and they said four, the first two running back to back, followed by an interval, and then the final two. Interesting set up as Wikipedia says the play was done in three in NYC (hence why I asked), but apparently that's a mistake and four, with one interval, is the usual set up.

The programme from the original LA production has it in two acts with four scenes plus two so-called "transitions". The 4th scene was added by the original playwright, Jack Heifner, especially for the musical and takes the story several years forward to 1990, 16 years after scene three.
