The journalist James O'Malley recently wrote a blog about AI generation called " Music has just changed forever and we should be freaking out more about it". In the article he says he asked the AI machine " to write an indie-rock song about Keir Starmer’s reforms of the Labour Party." The resultant 1m47 of track produced, available to hear in the blog post, isn't too bad. Three days later he posts this tweet declaring " an arguably *even better* AI music generator has emerged in the form of udio.com" with a generated song from the suggested Kier Starmer: The Musical. A visit to udio.com reveals that someone else has caused AI to create a song from 'Dune the Broadway Musical' which is actually rather catchy. With AI only set to get better, indeed this is the worst it will ever be, is this the start of a new revolution of musical theatre?

I watched a interview last night on the BBC i-Player last night where Benny & Bjorn from ABBA were interviewed and this exact topic was brought up in a question to them.
Whilst they both acknowledged that it was happening and inevitable, as Benny correctly stated, who would be credited with actually writing the song?

Incredible, mouseinthetheatre ! Almost as good as the composition pianowithsam and I came up with: TheatreBoard! TheatreBoard! How to win an Olivier Award? Who’s in the cast? Who will direct? No, not them... I have to object! Is there a dog? What height is the stage? Dayseats? No! That fills me with rage! I loved the cast You really should go But oh my word Bad behaviour at a show! Some sang along Some played with their phone Some kept quiet Not Patti LuPone! Do I make the team?

Quite a few other inventive compositions in that old thread, too.
With apologies for de-railing, back on the original topic.
On another board I frequent there were many users talking about how they will boycott the Late Night with the Devil movie because they used AI to generate art for one of the fake TV ident cards. Even if you don’t believe AI is stealing from other artists’ source material, it’s surely stealing potential work from them.
I think it’s fascinating how quickly the technology is advancing, but its potential uses raise all sorts of moral questions.

Well, there's already been Beyond the Fence, a computer-generated musical staged at the Arts Theatre in 2016. My memory was that it just felt very dull...

Can you explain what you inputted to arrive at this? Was there more than the instruction you quoted above? ("create a broadway show stopping show tune about the theatre board internet forum").I wouldn't call it particularly 'Broadway' (not old Broadway) so were you more specific on musical style? I know it was a different AI software to the Keir Starmer 'musical', but in the Starmer one you could hear moments when the AI had absorbed and regurgitated things (very) like 'Journey To The Past' from 'Anastasia' and probably bits of 'Oklahoma' and 'The Sound Of Music'.

I go to quite a lot of New Writing for Musical Theatre showcases - and a lot of the aesthetic choices and standards feel similar to these AI creations. People writing within an expected and predictable frame.
I think it may mean that the rise of the 'my personal story' show will only continue (so many self-expose solo fringe shows, and many very good). We'll look for authenticity to underpin what we get (even if that authenticity may be doubtable, and who will know if the performer used an AI tool to write their real or faked life experience?).
Perhaps we'll just see even more unusual shows, that aim to assure that they can only have been created by a human mind; and probably more self-performed musicals like 'Operation Mincemeat'.

I don't think AI as a creative tool will last, it lacks the authenticity and always will. People simply will always choose a human connection over a connection with something technological.
What I'm more concerned about is using AI to replace other roles in theatre, more on the technical side.

I know it's an ongoing debate in general with AI 'created' music, but it feels like a minefield to me as far as credits and potential profits go. If you put on an 'AI Musical' and it's a massive hit and makes a killing, who is getting paid? AI doesn't create anything out of thin air, it's trained on existing works. Do the writers of those works get paid? If not, why not? I'm sure someone might argue a human creating is also made up of influences of everything they've ever heard, but it's really not the same thing.

I would be amazed if at least one show at the Edinburgh Fringe wasn't completely AI this year

This one even contains something 'perfect' for rookie Musical Theatre writing, and too many who are experienced in it. That is the stress on THE wrong word in THE senTENCE: "From THE auditions to the final bows".

It's impressive that there are some elements of surprise in these (particularly the Starmer one) in terms of choppy phrases and offbeat shifts in the pattern of the song. But of course those have been ingested at MT traits, in the same way as everything else, but it makes it feel 'written' and therefore more authored.
As mentioned by others above, a writer could suss that their music has been processed and regurgitated - but can they prove it? And presumably if that ever became a problem the AI could just move the slider control to abstract the sources a bit more - copyright problem over (though I doubt it stood a chance anyway). If copyright holders ever demanded to see what was in the 'recipe' their work would be amongst hundreds or thousands of sources.
Perhaps more complicated music will be easier to replicate; whereas a simple melody that somehow just strikes a human chord will be more difficult for it to conquer.
How long until the 'new' Sondheim musical? Quite recognisable signature intervals to copy. You already know how this tune goes just by the lyrics: "Then Board, There's that cadence again, Board".

I’m easily amused tonight. The Melancholy Chocolate Bar suno.com/song/5da8ab8b-fc84-4602-8bfe-3655eea90fd8“Write a Rodgers and Hammerstein musical theatre style song about an upset chocolate bar” Lyrics [Verse] Once upon a candy shelf In a chocolate land so sweet There lived a chocolate bar that no one could ever beat But deep inside this bar of joy A bitter taste did reside For it longed to be chosen But the shelves It had to bide (oh-yeah) [Verse] The other treats would come and go Whisked away on a ride But the chocolate bar stayed behind Feeling lost and left aside Its caramel dreams were melting away As it cried out in despair "Pick me Pick me!" it pleaded But no one seemed to care (oh-no-no) [Chorus] Oh Upset chocolate bar Don't you lose hope (no-no) Your day to shine will come Just wait and see In this theatre of sweets You'll be the star Turn that frown upside down Little chocolate bar (woo!) The challenge is to craft everything into a coherent musical with a plot, progression, harmonies, real actors and musicians etc. A lot of it is possible, but not with a single tool, and you need human refinement and ingenuity. We will see a few novelty musicals like that produced, but funding and support will soon dry up. AI generated plays are easier and there have been a few already, but they’re more there as a talking point than as any serious illustration of quality. Everyone still wants to put their own stamp on things.
