If this is the case then they have marketed it miserably. I was totally put off by the way it was presented in the media, on ads etc. The last scene is very strong and quite graphic, however.

Totally agree with the rough consensus that's emerged on here, there's an interesting play in here but the therapy scene drags and made me just want the play to end instead of really engaging with the final act. Chop 10 minutes out of act 1, 20 minutes out of act 2 and leave act 3 as it is and it'd be a thought-provoking (if not earth shatteringly so) play.
Incidentally I just refused the sticker at the front door because I'm stubborn and was directed that I had to get permission from the manager. The manager didn't really push me I just explained I didn't really want stuff being stuck to my phone. I had to promise her that I'd switch it off, which I do anyway, and she took my seat down. I completely agree with the cause of stopping people using their phones during performances and stopping them from taking photos (especially of naked actors or very sensitive scenes) but making me put a sticker over my phone camera is infantilising. If the production cares about this then they need to police it properly by employing ushers who are paying attention.

It's a nonsense anyway, sure you could take the sticker off the minute you're in your seat if you wanted to.

I know the reason for the stickers is just to give people a visible reminder and remove the temptation to film or take photos.
It would be very easy to get around. Some people already carry multiple phones (personal phone, work phone, secret phone for their affair - I jest).
With that said, I didn't see any evidence of photos or filming on the day I was in. And I often spot people who the ushers miss.

The question is whether the people that film know they're not supposed to or if they genuinely miss every single cue telling them not to and accidentally break the rule. If it's the latter then sure the stickers are useful, I suspect though it's the former. The only thing it does do is show an extra layer of seriousness, I'm not sure how many patrons that specifically deters who wanted to film anyway.

Although l had by phone in my pocket l told the sticker guy i had no phone. He rather reluctantly allowed me in. He was hardly going to strip search me! (l had no intention of taking pics of actor's furtive fumblings~)

If this is the case then they have marketed it miserably. I was totally put off by the way it was presented in the media, on ads etc. I think there has been a lack of understanding of how Brits react to such stuff. If you tell us something is going to be shocking/scary then lots of us will cross our arms and insist that we aren't going to be that affected, and by the way 'who are you to think you can shock/scare me?!'. While those who don't like or roll our eyes at the thought of being shocked/scared are more likely to stay away. Anyone who has got this far in the thread won't be spoiled by me saying that there is a plot twist of sorts, and that not everything in the opening scenes is what it seems. I get why they think the play will have more power if people aren't told this in advance, and get to spot the clues in their own time, or have a big 'ahh' moment when the context is revealed. O'Harris likes the idea of people being uncomfortable, which I approve of in theory. But it requires something of a mismatch between the marketing and a lot of people who would be inclined to appreciate it. People are of course allowed to dislike/hate/not watch any piece of writing for all kinds of reasons, but there are clearly a lot of people who have decided the whole thing and everyone involved is a terrible person based on a misunderstanding of what it's about (and a bit of bad faith reporting). It's a bit like the people who thought Ewan McGregor and Trainspotting were promoting heroin chic. That said, there's a new trailer which I think gives a bit more away, including that at least some bits are supposed to be funny. x.com/estreetprods/status/1816503834811785288

Regarding stikers. I have been a refusnik in the past, largely on the basis it felt performative, a pretence given the stickers could be readily removed, or someone determined would obv. have a second device, etc, etc.
However, on reflection I wondered if it more about the performers and control; in a theatre you give permission but that isn't the same as releasing images of your bits to the world forever. It doesn't seem unreasonable that, if they want it, people should have agency over what they share of themselves.
I just wish they wouldn't use cheap, nasty glue on their stickers, or require bags.

I've booked to see the matinee of this on Wednesday, and it looks to have sold terribly so far...

It’s a predictable flop
And the London audience aren’t tricked by
“Controversy”
Times have changed
There is enough conflict, inequality and confrontation
In real life
Despite this I am still surprised quite how poorly it it selling
Madonna attending, blackout nights controversy, an attempt at stunt casting and an attention seeking author
With loads of media coverage of nudity
And still a flop

I can only say that last Wednesday's matinee appeared to be extremely busy on all levels. This is not a commercial flop. It just isn't, and anyway most plays have plenty of seats for grabs a few days in advance and then only a few unsold seats just before the actual performance.

I've not seen a single incidence of it papering. Has it popped up for anyone? No rumours going around of empty houses or closed balconies so I suspect it is doing just fine.

Now that the play is running and at the request of a member who wishes to discuss the actual play we have decided to reopen the thread.
At the point where it was closed there were 70 posts discussing the play and 149 posts arguing, troublemaking, trolling and name calling.
We will not be discussing the pros and cons of the blackout performances here.
If it descends into arguments the thread will be removed.
Reminder.

To be clear, I am not saying it is papering. I was just trying to point out, perhaps not very adroitly, that even *if* there was some papering going on, it was still very very busy last week which suggests it's doing well enough indeed. I certainly hope that's the case. We need shows like this to do well. I will amend my post above.

This really is not correct: Romeo and Juliet Macbeth Dorian Gray Lyonesse For Black Boys Plaza Suite Are all recent examples of plays which had sold out runs In advance of even opening Or close to sellouts for the entire runs I am sorry but Slave Play has plenty of noise around it And little outcome at the BO Despite huge discounts and pay what you can To me for a 12 week run of a play Isn’t a marker of massive success
