Great review Steve - I agree with some of your points, and you have an analytical eye that I envy! I gave this three and a half but have a hunch if I saw an evening performance, it might have heightened my enjoyment. The roof scene didn't work in bright sunshine.

I'll be seeing it from the very back of the upper circle - do we think the screen will be visible? will anything important be missed? I was sat in row D of the Upper Circle. The screen moves out of the way when not in use. On one occasion, the projection started before the screen had moved into place, but it was quickly visible. Apart from that, the projections were all fully visible. It may depend of where you are positioned but there are occasions where cast are lying or sitting on the sides of the stage and this may be slightly blocked by the curve of the upper circle or the heads of anyone leaning forwards. I don't know about the other levels but it was quite dark in the upper circle even in the interval - too dark to read the programme.

dip - you might want to post on Twickets, since it's quite short notice! Many people will have alerts set up for when an R&J ticket is listed.

... So yes I loved it, but I can also see that this won't be for everyone. It's very stylised but then in my opinion all good art is polarising right? It definitely sparks discussion and thought which great theatre should! I don't think polarisation is a prerequisite for art to be good, but I did appreciate your detailed review, as I can tell from that I would have been on the opposite side of the divide with much rolling of eyes. I'm so glad I resisted the FOMO urge to book. You are right, polarising is the wrong word, sorry. I meant something that sparks discussion / multiple opinions. Which this certainly has, for example this thread has double the views / replies of most plays on here. Including Macbeth with David Tennant. Lloyd and his casting certainly attracts audiences and opinions! On a side note did anyone else see this?, made me laugh - https://www.tiktok.com/@justsammorris/video/7368891087991098657

Just posted in the noticeboard, but got two Row A, Royal Circle tickets for tonight for sale I know they’re not known for their willingness to help usually, but given it’s a sold out run, is it worth a call to ATG to see if they’d resell them for you?

Fingers crossed It’s odd - I’ve signed up for Twickets alerts for this and the tickets aren’t getting snapped up as quickly in the way they were for say A Little Life or Sunset.

Has anyone been with the key worker tickets yet? Did they ask for ID? Somebody in front of me was asked to produce ID on Saturday and was rummaging through a bag for it. They had already had their ticket scanned first.

Has anyone been with the key worker tickets yet? Did they ask for ID? I had to show them my Blue Light card and my sister her driving licence. Guess they're more on the ball for this one compared to usual.

On the ATG website right now, they just released a handful of £90 restricted view seats for virtually all performances in July. Two seats each on the ends of Royal Circle Row C (apparently the end seat is a very restricted view, but the one next to it is fairly decent).

God this is pretty fn bad
I think most of the cast need elocution to speak normal day to day English first
Before they tackle verse
There is zero regard for iambic pentameter with several actors entirely devoid of any diction or enunciation skills
Just arbitrary dialogue
And sitting there I got the distinct impression the actors were reciting lines without any understanding of the text
It’s like the end of a roast dinner
Just a few scraps of fatty meat, gristle and bones
Not fit for a dog

It’s like the end of a roast dinner Just a few scraps of fatty meat, gristle and bones Not fit for a dog This made me laugh omg 😂 Surprisingly I think the main fault lies with the casting and acting Rather than the direction I have a lot of respect for Jamie Lloyd but here his lack of respect for the text along with the atrocious acting falls flat He has a distinct directorial style which means the source material has to be hammered and forced to fit his needs and terms and vision irrespective of if this is the correct approach This style is not particularly unique as many European theatre directors had his ideas years ago Maybe he should try directing a film instead of ramming constant camera work on stage If we are going to name names Freema was like Mistress Quickly on acid visiting Birds of Feather Utterly horrific to watch Nima Taleghani has the worst diction of any actor I have heard and I feel somehow this is his normal speaking voice Honestly I feel sorry and embarrassed for people paying 250 quid for this If you compare this to the great Shakespearean actors It’s laughable The recent Almeida staging and the amazing Rupert Goold RSC stagings are my all time favourites

Hmmm… saw the matinee. Some nice performances, unfortunately they’re surrounded by a load of pretentious sh*te.
The end of act one uses the screen for a quick clip of Romeo, covered in blood and running for his life. Should have been really dramatic, but was met with laughter.
Glad I’ve seen it, but certainly not one of Mr Lloyd’s better efforts.

I left at the interval
You all laugh at Dr Ranj cast in &J
Where is the acting excellence in R&J and all these apparently amazing talented people who deserve to take the roles??!!
Whoever cast this R&J didn’t have acting skills in mind

To me, it felt like Holland's Romeo is not just melancholic, but severely depressed to start with, and it's something love can't fix. At one point Friar tries and fails to make him snap out of it. Overall, the kids are not alright. There was no wonder or fancy to the Queen Mab speech when I saw it, it was more of a fever dream throughout. Even Paris seemed to not be all there.
Juliet starts out more robust in terms of mental health, but the environment quickly grinds her down. People around her, some more well-meaning than others, some grown-ups quite literally telling her to cheer up, push her towards the edge.
The suicides seem inevitable and not a result of a sequence of tragic accidents. There isn't a tiniest moment when one might think that maybe this time they'll make it. Nope, they're doomed, dead before they say a single word, and that's what makes it feel a bit like true crime to me.

That was what I liked about it. It made sense of the whirlwind romance and the suicides. It could have been a really visceral ending, but instead my reaction was “oh, they’re just going to sit there, are they?” Really was style over substance. parsley1 were you on row F by any chance? The man I was sitting next to clearly was not enjoying it in the slightest and fled at the interval too.

Nope, they're doomed, dead before they say a single word, and that's what makes it feel a bit like true crime to me. Yes. Exactly. That's how I felt. There's not a single feelgood moment in it. And that shocked me. That's why I rate this particular marmite show highly. I honestly didn't think I could be surprised by such a well known play. Its SO bleak and downbeat and inexorable. Its amazing, really.
