Nope, not even for a fiver: after a hard day with the patriarchy, I'll patriarch elsewhere. Made me smile. I always worry about ‘reimagining’ as if all productions don’t do it again.. Interesting the idea of analysing ‘capitalism’ in Mof V 😂 I would imagine that their analysis of prejudice, patriarchy and capitalism will conclude that they are all VERY BAD THINGS. What they need to do in Measure for Measure is to plainly base Angelo on Matt Hancock - high-minded public puritanism and private seething hypocricy. I mean it's an open goal but there was a time when directors would have gone for the obvious, make the Duke Boris Johnson too for good measure, would work well in the final scene.

I really like the SWP - very cosy and atmospheric. While I'd agree under normal circumstances, the last thing I want during a pandemic is to be crammed onto benches being "cosy" with the rest of an audience! So it's fortunate there's no anything I want to see there this season as it's near the bottom of my list of theatres I'd feel safe going to.

Yet this production appears to be aiming to focus on a character who is only in a handful of scenes and completely absent from the final act...

I do find it ludicrous to see such hyperbolic language in their descriptions of productions that are nowhere near the rehearsal room. I know it is the easy way out when it comes to marketing writing but it is for us the audience to decide whether this production of M4M is 'darkly comic'. The director will have things in mind now that will get thrown out in the rehearsal room long before an audience gets anywhere near the show. The description of Merchant sounds very little like the play I know. The idea that it is Shylock's play went out decades ago. To put together a description of the piece with zero reference to Portia seems perverse. Something is rotten in the state of the marketing department Doesn't surprise me in this day and age. I see this more and more in these advertising. Either its just a bunch of buzzwords, or the director is indeed going to cram in as many contemporary issues into the play as she pleases. Always put story first and let the themes and issues seep through, that what I always say.

I think the only thing that would induce me to go to the Globe again would be Henry VIII. However I hope they restart the Read Not Dead programme in the SWP.

A couple of the Willie’s and a new ‘play’ about colonialism set in two or three time periods with a cast of actors who speak in different languages. Betcha. ( yep that kinda day..)

I usually go and see a few productions each season, I love the Globe but in recent years there has been a lot of repetition (understandably!) so looking forward to something new.

They've announced a 90 minute 'intro to Shakespeare' version of Macbeth, directed by Sarah Frankcom www.whatsonstage.com/london-theatre/news/shakespeares-globe-macbeth-cast-sarah-frankcom_55730.htmlThey have been very slow to announce casting for all the Wanamaker Winter shows. I can't remember if that's been the case in the past. I booked Measure for Measure without knowing the cast, because I hadn't seen it for years, but I'm waiting on the cast announcement for Merchant. It will have to be an interesting cast to make it worth shelling out £40 to sit behind a pillar on a bench with no backrest.

I've just read the WOS casting announcement for The Merchant Of Venice which states "Said to be reinterpreting Shakespeare's problem-laden play through a contemporary context". I can only be glad that I saw the Globe's previous straightforward production in 2015 which just performed the play - very well too, I thought - rather than reinterpreted it!

They are making it Shylock's play. Which is hardly radical or innovative.
There was a long tradition particularly in the 19th century IIRC of ending the play after the trial and ignoring Act 5 completely.
Shylock appears in a very small number of scenes and exits the play in Act 4. He isn't the dominant character in terms of lines or stage time. Yes he is a key player but the play as written is not the Shylock play. He certainly isn't the title character as some have always believed.
So I fear that this will be an attempt to force a contemporary agenda on the text.
I find it frustrating that so many contemporary directors don't trust the text to show you how to approach the play. If you don't trust it, don't direct it.

It is accepted that in Shakespeare's day those two parts were probably doubled isn't it ? However, a gender-swapped production with a Queen instead of Henry VIII & a female Wolsey with a modern playwright credited alongside Shakespeare and Fletcher is more controversial, in my view mainly because we hardly ever get this play done at all so why alter it - we’re not familiar enough with it to appreciate a radically different perspective on it
