4 hours is only losing about 40 to 50 minutes of material. That isn't a cut, it is a light trim.
Given how repetitious the plays are, there is no reason why the run time for a cut version should exceed 2hrs 30 including interval. 80 minutes for part one and 60 for part two.
4 hours is cruel on audiences and actors.

When I directed these plays (cut together in one play), we doubled Northumberland with Shallow. That would work well for SirIan. Olivier doubled Hotspur in Part I and Shallow in Part II. Another time he played Mr Puff in Sheridan's "The Critic" and Oedipus Rex in the same evening. We don't get actors doing flashy doubling like that now - Bertie Carvell should revive the tradition. The plays were famously combined into one by Orson Welles for his film Chimes at Midnight. It worked OK. I was very much aware of that famous doubling but the project came about when I was chatting to the actor who was playing Lear for me and he said he always wanted to be Shallow and hence the production started to be shaped. A certain Ed Holcroft was the Hotspur in the production... Wonder what happened to him?!! |

Icke is, as always, just photocopying what his daddy, Ivo van Hove, has done before. I feel his whole career is so unoriginal in this respect. This will be no small feat as McKellen will be 85. I agree 4 hours is an endurance test for everybody.
I wonder why it didn't go to an ATG venue given they are producing it?

Who thought 18:30 was a suitable start time on week nights in Wimbledon? No wonder provincial theatre is the preserve of the retired. Basically no-one who works normal working hours can do this unless (a) they work next door, (b) they take annual leave, or (c) they do the Saturday matinée. I reluctantly went for (c) and pray that the football game I'm going to is rescheduled for Sunday.

Ah, you can get £55 front row in Manchester if you do opening night and go for the end of the row, but as a previous poster said 18:30 is not feasible for most people working that day. |

Chimes at Midnight is superb Yes it is. As an adaptation of the plays it is OK - it cuts out various quite dull rebellions and so on which give the wider political context and focusses on the main characters and their relationships. As such it is a little bit like the cut versions of Hamlet that we almost always get. I'll have to watch this never seen it, Welles as Falstaff was one of the perfect roles that could ever be thought up. |

I know ATG has had success with pre West End runs at Richmond and Brighton but Wimbledon and the Opera House are huge! This will be no small feat as McKellen will be 85. Technically, it is going to ATG venues with the runs in Wimbledon and Manchester but I suspect it's theatre availability plus the DoY is smaller both stage wise and capacity than the Noel Coward. |

Does Falstaff need to be obviously fat? In the same way as when teenagers think of anyone over 25 as being old, slender youths can too often think that anyone who isn't slim and toned is fat, ugly and call them out as such. Sometimes that is done with affection. Sometimes it is done with real cruelty. Given how many of the descriptions of Falstaff come from Hal, I think it can be viewed as the immature behaviour of a younger man |
