Well, Andrzej Lukowski has tweeted hinting that he liked it a lot so who knows! "Just saw a really great musical!" is the quote. Either he'd been at home streaming 'The Prince of Egypt' or things on here are about to get spicy. |

When are reviews due to be released? Official ‘opening night’ is tomorrow, so would assume from midnight 27/28th March. In the press on Thursday I guess. I’m still a bit disappointed I went to an early preview before they’d make some changes/cuts (and improvements?) but not sure I’d risk going back given it’s still a lot to wade through! |

Naturally, there will be those critics who say they like it in order to appear clever. It is a somewhat avant garde piece which is an excellent opportunity for them to remind the public that they "get it" so much more than we do...

Same here, went early and paid a lot for seats. Though am tempted to go again just to see if they’ve pulled it together! I saw the first preview that was a total mess ,so I wrote to the theatre and they offered me tickets at a vastly reduced rate so I could see the finished article! I also wrote to the producers who were just damn right rude!! If you wrote to them to let them know what a "total mess" their show was I am not sure what reaction you were expecting? |

There will be those who pretend to like it in order to feel like they "appreciate" and "understand" art more than others do etc. It has always been the same in all areas of the arts. |

Technically, if measuring by the length of time you have to sit in your seat enduring the performance, it must be less bad because people in this thread have reported a much-reduced running time since the start of previews |

You know I was wondering why there were so many tickets available for a Sheridan Smith Show. Usually they'd get eaten up no?
Reading this thread has been fascinating, I thank you for entertaining me on this drab work afternoon!
Was interested in this as I was intrigued by the premise, albeit I'm not really a musical person in all honesty, plus seeing Benjamin Walker live on stage would be nice.
But it sounds like I may have to give this a miss? 😟

We regular theatregoers on here have the luxury of being able to say what we really think (within the site rules). Professional reviewers on the other hand have their own brand to sell and their own editors to please, which, consciously or otherwise, will influence their output.
The other point made above is also true, that there are some people, and not just among critics, who like to flaunt their "cleverness". You hear them when there is a joke in a play that requires some esoteric knowledge to fully appreciate. A normal response would be a small chuckle, but this type of person will let out a prolonged and loud belly laugh, just so the whole audience is aware. I've noticed this trait a lot more on Broadway than in the West End.
Of course, there is plenty about the arts that can be high-brow, for want of a better term, and I don't see discussing such aspects on here and elsewhere with interested others as necessarily showing off. It's the manner in which it's done I think that can sometimes give the impression that self-promotion rather than an interest in the show is a significant driver. Happily these boards seem to be almost entirely free of such things, which I cannot truthfully say of some professional reviews I read.

I don't think a decent seat in the stalls at a west end theatre for £80 is unreasonable? I paid that myself for a front stalls seat at previews. I don't think you would get a view as good for that price at many west end theatres these days. Preview or not.
My main problem with the show was some of the staging. Yes, some of this camera work may have been done before but I haven't seen it. Any other time I think they could have got away with it but straight after Sunset Boulevard makes it seem like they are copying. Especially when you add in the outdoor scene and filming backstage etc.
The red curtain was very much overused.
The ensemble were very much underused. They must be bored out of their tree. What a shame they could not have given them more to do than sit/stand and stare.
It wasn't all bad. I didn't love it but I certainly didn't hate it. I thought Sheridan was fantastic and it was definitely worth seeing for her alone in my opinion.

Sorry to make this point again but Ivo Van Hove has not copied Sunset Boulevard with the camera stuff!
Did none of you see Network?! Or All About Eve?! 😂 Michelle Dockery literally started a scene on the railing of the Southbank, came through the passdoor and onto the Lyttleton stage - he did it before anyone else did
