Maybe the Jake Gylennhal rumours are actually about London and not broadway. I know, one can dream. He would certainly be better box office here. Jake was due to do Sunday in the Park in London and not Sweeney. Jake was recently rumored to take over from Groban in Sweeney Todd on Broadway |

Having seen the production I think it’s boring and the only reason to transfer would be if they can find an amazing cast (for the most part, I do think they found that in NYC including and especially Groban).

Did you all see the same production I did? I found it quite thrilling.
I'm curious, was there something in particular that made the production thrilling for you? I think it had a few thrilling moments, mostly because of the movement/choreo or staging/stage pictures.
But in general, I've never seen a Sweeney Todd production that didn't have some thrilling moments. Some degree of thrilling is baked into the show IMHO.

Jamie Lloyd wants to do a revival so perhaps we'll get that instead? A black stage. The barber shop is just a series of chairs on stage. The pies are a metaphor. Mrs Lovett is played by a child.

I think the production is thrilling in the sense that it performs the material in a very respectful way so it’s thrilling because the material is thrilling. But I don’t think the direction beyond the performances is as creative or scary as: the original, the John Doyle, the pie shop one off Broadway and London, or even the film. These all had things like creepy moments, whistles, overwhelming proximity to actors, innovative ideas etc (some or many). Some might say they all had some cheap tricks, but they work.

It’s so pedestrian. The sound was terrible- unforgivable when they have such a big orchestra.
Annaleigh Ashfords many accents were excruciating , Josh Groban wasn’t scary at all. The whole production was terribly directed.

There’s a clip of her trying out the accent on James Corden’s show and, as diplomatic as talk show hosts always have to be, he was clearly unimpressed and couldn’t bring himself to say anything nice about it. The worst thing is, I think she thought she was doing a decent job! |

Year after if anything. I know they WANTED to transfer but a National Tour diverts resources away from staging another full production, and that's not coming until at least midway through next year.
Where on earth could it go? A transfer like this was initially rumoured for TRDL, but that's been disproven. Unless a big theatre suddenly opens up I think the chances of this are really low. And even then, I get the feeling there are other shows that would try their hardest to beat it to the punch. (Insert Broadway show that wanted to transfer in the pandemic here)

Every single one of the theatre professionals I’ve spoken to who saw this in NYC were of exactly the same mind as me. This was a pedestrian production of a great musical, and we don’t need it here.

It did seem watered down, and the choreography was unnecessary and distracting. Didn't rate the two leads either, but Annaleigh especially would be ripped apart over here for her accent and portrayal.
