Reviews are out and mostly threes, with a few surprising fours and a daft five from WEBF. The Americans (NYT and Variety) not keen at all. Will be very interested to see if it can last more than 6 months on write-ups like this, I don’t think it’ll be a big word-of-mouth hit either.

I think WAISS becoming another Six is looking very unlikely. It's not a complete critical dud but Variety hit the nail on the head about it lacking appeal aside from Gen Z

4s from evening standard, the stage, the I and a glowing review from the times - enough to fill a poster, for sure.

The reviews read to me that this is a 2 star show in reality, but most of the major outlets aren't brave enough to say so and so are going 3.
The WOS review even says there's issues and still gave it 5, so Sarah Crompton seems to just want to throw away her credibility for some reason.
Will go in a few weeks and see, but really not holding out much hope.

This is exactly what I thought, lots of critics inflating their star ratings where the only things they’re complimenting are the cast and some of the songs. It sounds like as a musical, it’s just not that good!

It has history on its side. It’s just solid joy, whereas this appears to have a specific ‘catchment’. I only have to wait a week to find out.

How on earth can anyone think it's a 4 or 5 star show. It's like when Legally Blonde at the Park was given 4 and 5 stars and it was...appalling - given these ratings because people feel that they should

Both the NYT and Variety's reviews are written by Brits. I do think some of the more glowing reviewers were hedging their bets a little (Clive Davis's 4 reminded me of his 5 for ALW's Cinderella...) but as I said in my review a few pages back - this is not a musical designed for older generations and I think it's fair to give it some leeway rather than damning it with negative ratings just because the more experienced reviewers are't convinced they personally get it.

How on earth can anyone think it's a 4 or 5 star show. Its all subjective though. Critics (both professional & armchair) and awards ceremonies are all a load of fluff.

If it didn't have Lucy and Toby's names behind it, every review would probably be a star less... After the success of Six, they've made names for themselves as good writers, which they are, but even good writers can write nonsense, and they have. If this was an unknown writer's show, I'm not sure anyone at all would be impressed. In fact, I'm not sure anyone would have invested enough money to get it produced.

She gave Lucy Moss’ Legally Blonde five stars too and that was an objectively impossible rating to give that dumpster fire.

There’s a definite whiff of not wanting to miss the zeitgeist on this one from the press. Thing is, if they witnessed its’ target demographic lapping it up how could you argue that it is unsuccessful? It can be ‘not for me thanks’, but if the majority of the audience are loving it, it is an objective success.

It can be ‘not for me thanks’, but if the majority of the audience are loving it, it is an objective success. My comment was solely focused on legally blonde. Agreed though, uk “critics” are clearly not wanting to miss the zeitgeist on this one. Disagree that the target demographic are lapping this up, too early to tell. Every show is going to have small groups of people that enjoy it, and this is especially one where there will be vocal groups early on. Whether they sustain any “success” is to be seen. Depends how you define “objective” success anyway I guess…
