I really enjoyed it! Lucy Moss came out and explained that it’s very much a ‘first draft’ as workshops usually are, but I was very impressed with the cast, especially Joe Foster - simply wow!
The plot needs work, they talk about being in a musical wanting to write a musical, but then lose the fact they’re writing a musical at times and the handling of that fact felt very clunky, especially when it’s been done so recently with A Strange Loop.
It had airs of Title of Show about it, I think the performances lifted the material. All the songs were too long; especially a song Christina sang in act one which was incredibly repetitive and felt as boring to watch as Heart of Stone in Six, excellent vocals and performance from Christina Bennington during it but it was never ending.
The highlight was Joe Foster, they are a star and seeing their full range in this show was a delight, I was so enamoured with them throughout. Even their incredible performance in the disco ball song couldn’t hide the fact that it was about 2 minutes too long.
But overall for a first draft of a show and songs, it was wonderful, I’d give it 4 stars as a workshop! I was a little worried about the direction after the mess that was Legally Blonde at Regent’s Park but I think Lucy Moss has found her feet again here.

I don't think you can judge her on Legally Blonde as she did it right after spending far too much time around know it all Americans who had already done rather large amount of harm to her cash cow. Hopefully she's gone back to following her own instincts a little more that what she 'should' do.

I am just home from seeing the final performance of this workshop. As a previous poster said, Lucy Moss came on stage before it started to say it was very much a "first draft".
Overall, there is definitely potential here. Some great songs, good choreography and a very strong cast. However, I thought the plot was terrible - and not just something that needs a bit of tweaking. For me, it just didn't work at all. As the blurb says - "Why Am I So Single? is a musical about two perpetually single best friends who can’t figure out why they are so single, and who are also (on a completely unrelated note) deciding what to write their next musical about." I really didn't see the need for it to be about writing a musical. It was clunky, often just disappeared, and didn't have a satisfying pay off at all.
With some re-writes, it could be a great "slice of modern life" show - the character who comes in just after the interval could be introduced earlier to help with plot points. I hope they take a proper look at the book and that this has a future life...

Were the characters basically author inserts? It sounds to me like the case. I always have issues with this form of storytelling because it relies on the authors being as interesting as people as they think they are.

It seems this is heading straight to the West End... hopefully they've done a lot of work on it!

There's a thread already started for this but with the name used in the workshop 'Why am I so Single?' 🙂

I think I prefer the old name. At least you kinda knew what it was going to be about.

I think the Romeo and Juliet rush for tickets today has overshadowed this, I think tickets go on sale at 10am today with the show name also being announced

Already booking for a 6 month run. Although I enjoyed the workshop and saw potential, it was incredibly early stages. Hopefully they've made a lot of changes (especially large book re-writes) to get this West End ready...

Yep, booked. £35 seems reasonable. If the tunes are as catchy as ‘Six’ it can’t fail can it?
