I had joined Young Vic when they had Ruth Negga lined up as Portia Coughlan. Covid put pay to that so while I'm glad to see the play at least returning, casting was always going to disappoint me. I did click through with a second of hope.

I saw the Denise Gough version at the Abbey and it was superb, with a great supporting cast and set.
This sounds promising though. I thought Alison Oliver was really excellent in Best Interests.

Carrie Cracknell made the right choice to return to theatre after the disaster that was her film Persuasion. I had a ticket for the Young Vic Portia, might get one for this.

Alison Oliver has been excellent in everything I’ve seen her in - loved her in Dancing at the National recently so very much looking forwards to her in this ( will tempt me to make the x London trip to the almeida!).

I loved Alison Oliver in Lughnasa so will definitely be seeing this but also hope Ruth Negga does a play in London soon to make up for that Portia not happening.
King Lear I can take or leave, maybe depending on supporting cast.

Portia Coughlan with Denise Gough at The Abbey last year was amazing. The play itself is really standing the test of time. I loved Alison Oliver in Dancing at Lughnasa so I expect she will be superb.

There’s a gap between November and February. Perhaps Spring Awakening will return? They weren’t able to finish their run last time due to COVID interruptions.

They're almost informal co-ADs already, aren't they .. he wanders off to direct elsewhere (Dear England, etc), she does a stint, he comes back .. Yael Farber looks after the stall if they're both busy. Developed into quite the production line.

That’s one reason he is a good AD - he has mentored and given multiple opportunities to good young directors by putting them on the staff, first Robert Icke then Rebecca Frecknall. Something that Greg Doran deliberately didn’t do at the RSC. So the Almeida, if they want, have a succession plan and the RSC didn’t. |

In terms of the NT, I guess the thing is - and we see this in so many workplace hierarchies - for the sake of an extra £x, who needs the added pressure and attention/expectation of a promotion. In this example, money presumably isn't a factor though the rest applies; they have a comfortable, artistically satisfying arrangement, almost a job share on one level: Why invite everything, the high profile multiple threaded drama, that an appointment at the NT brings .. I don't know but I'd guess such a role appeals to a rather small subset of an already small group.

Yes I'm sure you're right, I imagine the NT didn't have that many applicants this time. And some people like Simon Godwin and Rupert Goold who probably would have been willing to take on the job probably didn't even apply as it had already been signalled they didn't fit the profile of who the NT board wanted this time (Goold said something like that in an interview a while ago, that probably the next AD would be a woman). |
