It’s in TodayTix app without all the fees, NGL I am tempted to go for a £46 band. The whole cult flop thing + Kerry Ellis is a draw for sure. Thought process is going like: Diana the musical - ah why not could be fun! In concert - meh, but alright With Kerry Ellis - oh yes definitely then! And Denise Welch - sorry what? Why……why would they do that? Denise Welch released one single - a cover of “You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me’ - in 1995. Found a video of her singing it 4 years ago - scroll to the end when she gets up and has the microphone - see what you think! I don’t know Maiya Quansah-Breed, but quick google tells me she’s another Six alumna so I’m assuming she’s a decent performer and brings in the yoof theatre kid crowd, why is her casting a problem though? Are those comments purely due to her skin colour or am I missing something? Eddie Izzard could be either awful or hilarious if that rumour is true, I simultaneously find him reasonably entertaining (used to be very bloody funny back in the heyday of Dress to Kill) and also an incredibly irritating human. Thanks for the TodayTix tip. Found a single seat there in stalls row C for £95 all in, right at one edge but still better in my opinion than anything on the Eventim website.

I went and checked right when tickets went on sale yesterday and every other row in the stalls and a fair few rows in the dress weren't ever on sale through the main website.

If the show has a particular "concept" like Six or Hamilton, it works. If it is supposed to be a more (even if somewhat camp) naturalistic portrayal of a recent and very famous public figure I don't feel it really does. You would never cast a white or Asian Desmond Tutu for example. Or a white Tina Turner. Or you had a random black Von Trapp child in the Sound of Music or a white Four Top or Temptation in one of the musicals featuring the Motown legends

I'm all for progressive casting in 2023 but come on - we can't cast BAME actors as Diana! (cue the long screaming debate). I understand we have Six and Hamilton that represent historical characters in different casting but Diana ONLY died in 1997 and her sons are both still alive! We wouldn't dare cast white actors now in BAME roles so this is just a step too far and ridiculous. As someone says above no one would cast a white Tina Turner. The West End and the current UK TV industry and its selective diversity is going MAD. I won't be booking.

It's a 1 off, concert performance of the show. They'll probably just be standing behind mic stands all night. She'll be singing the role of Lady Di and gets about 3 songs, if that. And you still cant get past the colour of her skin? 🤔

They were all on sale when I got mine. I also saw only alternate rows, and nothing available in the first few in the stalls. I thought Ticketmaster may have been allocated the front rows to sell as premiums but couldn't find them anywhere so decided not to book. Then kyvai posted the tip off about Today Tix and I got row C there, albeit a side view. Maybe they had a sizeable allocation ?

I'd only seen the main names announced and not looked at the juvenile castings but it's one to tick off the list just need a white or asian member of Temptations or Four Tops in Motown musical now. In all seriousness I can give the underage casting more of a pass as a lot of the criteria for casting them is down to their ability and the pool of talent might be smaller.

To be honest, I care less about the skin colour of the cast than the fact they've decided to double cast it - it doesn't need to be. THAT is what is silly here. And to the comment before about her children still being alive: I'm not sure I see the point? Out of everything this musical does, the skin colour of the actress playing Diana is probably the thing to be least upset about for them.
I said it when it debuted and I'll repeat now: the score is actually wonderful. If it was attached to any other subject matter, it would do amazingly well. I genuinely love it!

Clearly they are holding many tickets back and better seats will likely be released closer to the concert, I would think.

When the show first began at the La Jolla Playhouse, it was quite different to what went to Broadway/Netflix.
The show opened with Diana looking back at her life, singing a song called 'Once Upon A Time' and there are a few other songs that got cut in later versions. There was a younger version of Diana in that production, and given that they have said that the London concert will be Diana looking back on her life, I assume they are bringing back some of those cuts.

So, to be totally honest, the casting of the kids on The Sound of Music doesn't really bother me. I think sometimes you can suspend disbelief and it doesn't matter so much.
But when you're casting a recent, very famous public figure, I do think that you need to stick a bit closer to reality, yes.

Clearly they can write a quality score, they won the Tony Awards for best score, best book and best new musical for Memphis Well let's face it, Memphis was up against American Idiot, Fela! and Million Dollar Quartet - not a sterling year . It's probably one of the most mediocre shows to ever win the Tony for Best Musical. The authors are decent craftsman but their work is consistently uninspired .

I will never understand the hate for Diana. Whilst yes, some of the lyrics are cringy as hell "Harry my ginger haired son". Sure. But as a whole, most of the songs themselves are pretty brilliant!
Genuinely think that if the subject matter was different, people would really like the songs, at least.

Like the year Thoroughly Modern Millie won
