There's something so magical and thrilling about witnessing this production live, that, for once, I think it's best for it to stay without a recording. For all its cinematic elements, it's a deeply theatrical experience that would lose so much if it were to be filmed. I have to disagree with you on this. If there is a recording, you'll always have the option of simply not watching it, but if there isn't a recording, those who'd like to watch it won't have this choice. My position here is simple: art should always be made available for those who need it. If I had the power, I would definitely see to it myself, but unfortunately it's not in my hands.

It's so weird watching it and listening to him singing but you can't hear the music.

Wow. I know we all now know this is how it happens. But to see it from that perspective is just bonkers. Brilliantly bonkers. Assume he has the orchestra in his earpiece. But to sing like that without all the usual cues and lack of distraction actors are usually afforded on stage to help them be note perfect - it’s insane. What a talented guy!

Kind of agree with both sides. I’m very much in the camp that most stage shows come across poorly in film and/or bootlegs. But for this one especially I think it’s true. You are right though that art should be accessible and available to those that want to see it and can’t get to the theatre. Though you could say that about everything. What I passionately feel however is that with this cast, vocals and orchestra it will be an absolute crime if they don’t do a cast recording. Though Heaven knows ALW London revivals struggle with this!

Oh absolutely - it's so cinematic it just wouldn't work as a streaming offer. Cast recording though? Gimme that immediately with bonus tracks of Tucker's With One Look and As If We Never Said Goodbye Yeah this was what I was thinking - should've made that clear - didn't expect a film of the theatre presentation, but a cast recording. I mean the little teases we've had of Nicole (and even Rachel) singing this score sounds glorious. I know I'm a fan-atic of SB, but it's hard to imagine the Nicole fans and new SB fans being impressed with the last official, full length recording of Glenn from almost 30 years ago. I loved Glenn, even in 2017 - but vocally this is an entirely different experience

It's a trick one for me. I think that plays are a bit better served on video than musicals, but even then, it's not the same. There's something lost without the physical space it's meant to be played in. And crucially, I think acting is often the worst served by recording. Purely from a personal perspective, I'd be just fine with theatre not getting filmed, even when I miss out on productions. I understand the arguments against this though, and how they would remain even in an ideal world with affordable access and more geographic spread.

...And good heavens, the grotesque shape she gave to the word "home" in that interminable holding of it, I dunno. Perhaps the entire song sounded better in context.
Doesn't Nicole do the exact same thing with it, though? I think it's directed this way for both of the leads, is it not? I THINK so....both Nicole and Rachel seem to have a very distinctive way of singing (for example) 'hommeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee........AT LASTTTTTT" which sounds like it is being influenced by the director. I absolutely love the choice.

Oh, the chances of a pro-shot are basically non-existent, with Paramount holding the rights of the original movie etc, but they'd be very foolish not to release a cast recording

But this art is “theatre”, and though I agree that should be accessible for anyone who wants to see it (like the cheap tickets they made available), that doesn’t mean it should necessarily be filmed. That’s a different art form entirely.

That’s a different art form entirely. I love watching and re-watching professionally filmed theatrical productions (be it a musical or a play), I see absolutely nothing wrong with preserving them for those who (like me) don't mind watching them this way. For me not filming any theatrical production and not making it available for anyone interested is always a missed opportunity, whereas filming one is always a blessing.

I agree with all of that, I personally love it when stage shows are filmed, but I was responding to your point that “art should always be made available for those who need it”, which is not the same thing.

People tend to forget it's not cheap to film productions and honestly producers aren't going to waste money on recording everything especially things that have flopped.

Yeah- and things change don’t they! The reviews are out and Broadway has come sniffing around Things as big as a Broadway transfer change within the space of a week? When your claim was to do with Nicole's schedule? The reviews feature her prominently, suppose you'll say within the very week she's dropped out of other commitments as well.

I would love for this to be filmed, but it either has to be a house-cam (completely objective view) or an absolutely bonkers, experimental new direction in which to capture this show (with a high level of control from team Jamie Lloyd/Nathan Amzi/Joe Ransom). There are so many strictly dictated axes, blocking, etc. that makes the show look and sound so impressive live- you can't get any average 'proshot theatre' production team in for this adding an outsider's perspective that dilutes the strength of the design and vision.
360° video might be overkill (would love to be proven wrong) but perhaps 360° sound? Still dreaming of that wall of sound when the entire company stand in line during 'Let's Have Lunch'...

Madame. The turbans. Have arrived.
(Apologies if this has already been covered somewhere upthread. Nicole now wears a classic Norma turban in her dressing room in the Entr’acte. First time I’d seen her donning turbanage. This iconic production just became MORE iconic. There’s also now a cardboard cutout of ALW. Which got a cheer).
Tom delivered a flawless Sunset Boulevard in the rain despite increasing number of people in the way on The Strand.
