Maybe go and actually see the show? At least you'd then have something to base an opinion on. I didn’t know if it was a criticism of the unseen show or the excellent review? Me neither - given both the show and review were excellent (in my view), I found the opinion unfounded and somewhat harsh. |

I LOVED this so much! A uniquely brilliant show! It is a thrillingly theatrical piece about the power of the camera, and the power of the spotlight, about what it takes to be a star and what it means to lose it. Nicole Scherzinger and Tom Francis are fabulous! Spoilers follow. . . All a bit pretentious and onanistic. Makes me want to see it even less! You had me at 'pretentious' but I'll stay for 'onanistic'. Where do I book? |

I may be remembering this wrong, but it was around 22:10 when I got out of the theatre last night. This did start slightly late, but the whole show seemed longer than 2 hours 20 minutes.
Yesterday was my £20 back of the Dress Circle ticket booked last week. I have to say, this is an excellent production for people familiar with the show, and the sound quality is fantastic. If you don't know the show, you might struggle to follow it. I prefer to sit nearer the front, but with so much played on a cinema screen, it really doesn't matter.
My usual complaint is that I could have done without the people laughing at moments that I don't think were intended to be funny (and the phone going off in the closing minutes) but those are the breaks when you have a lot of audience members who are only there to see the star name.
Not much else I can add to the previous reviews, but I will be back again later in the week with a lottery ticket, so I'll certainly share where the seat is once I know.

Just got the email from ATG And the voucher can only be used for Sunset Boulevard If they've cancelled the performance they have to give you a refund if you can't make another show - I understand them doing the credit first but they're no longer offering what you purchased so you're legally due a refund (just as an FYI to people) |

Yes, Being Alive is absolutely right - lots of companies will try their luck and offer a credit note or equivalent first, but you're entitled to respond and ask for a refund.

Also there last night and what an oddity this is. So many elements of storytelling have been removed, to the point where, without prior knowledge of the show, I fear many will be lost.
People seemed wowed by the camera work, reactions to which were lovely to see, but do they know this type of hybrid work has been around for years? Having read abojt the start of Act 2, but not what specifically happened, I was disappointed to see it was avery distracting walk around the theatre (didn’t Ivo do that with Network years ago? And many productions before and after?).
Nicole seemed to act with her whole body, but I’m not sure how much of it was truly connected. Tom looked and sounded great. No chemistry between them, but did it matter? Grace the standout: what a voice and great acting. David seemed miscast…and very much “acting”. Biggest laugh came with him looking at the Pussycat Dolls photo on his dressing room mirror (what was that all about?).
Found it so hard to connect with a production that seemed to be doing everything in its power to not let you connect with it.
And the poor ensemble: this stripped back a production renders them more unnecessary that usual. They added so little. Yet we’re working so hard. (All that dimly lit choreo…).
One thing to ask: they looked so unhappy last night at the curtain call. Not one happy face. It sort of summed it up for us.
I fear the newspapers (not the bloggers; the bloggers will be rhapsodic, and may not have seen the much lauded camera work in a show before) may call Emperor’s New Clothes on it all.
Do we know when it’s off to Broadway yet? They’d have to have a Feb/March/April opening to guarantee Tony Noms.

Guessing they didn’t give a reason for cancelling the 12th of October matinee? Shame for everyone who booked especially for Rachel’s first show.
They really should offer everyone who booked a Spotlight £20 seat for that performance a new ticket at that price for any performance of their choice but I doubt they will knowing ATG…

I believe it’s been cancelled due to cast well-being, they would be doing 10 shows that week with dress rehearsals for Rachel Tucker and producers want them on top form for press night…

I have not seen this production and probably won't- the original production is firmly imprinted on my brain- so am not in a position to comment however I was speaking to someone on Saturday night and he was... well, let's just say, he wasn't kind.

I really don't go to plays, only musicals and I've never seen it in a musical before. I believe something similar was used in Oklahoma recently but I didn't see that as they had murdered the music and knew I would hate it. Cast looking unhappy at the end. I think that's the direction as they were the same for the first preview. Shame as I'm sure they were smiling away inside by the audience reaction. |

Someone clearly doesn't know the meaning of the word 'opinion' Being dismissive of someone else's thoughts on it doesn't make your opinion any more valid. How is it "dismissive" to spend an hour contemplating the words of Steve's review and writing over a dozen paragraphs explaining as best I can my disagreements with it? Discussion and debate have been an integral part of art consumption for as long as art has been a thing. Steve started this particular discussion by positioning his review as a direct response to "the naysayers"; am I, a naysayer, not allowed to respond back? Yes, I know the meaning of the word "opinion"; I also know the meaning of the word "dialectic". I strongly disagreed with Steve's review, but it was well written and I feel I learnt something from it. Maybe someone who strongly disagrees with me will learn something from my reviews? |

Thanks for these. Yes, it will be interesting with the camera work, because it is already quite a n old fashioned device in plays, that sort of peaked and has faded from productions now, so will be interesting for the musical goers only world to get to experience it. It’s not new though, and I’m fearful the excitement on here regarding eg the title number, will not be regarded in such high esteem by reviewers who will have seen it used a million times before. Goodness, why would they ask a cast not to smile at bows? Is that a thing? Do other shows do this? We thought they’d done such a great job to get through the show, but they looked like someone close to them had passed away. We were worried for them. They don’t reduce anything until very very late. TKTS has good £50/£70 tickets every day. Waiting for a day I can go and think I will scoop up some from TKTS.

The lack of movement on ATG's site (at least when I was checking) made me think I'd have to settle for the £50 ones on TKTS. But if they go as low as £20 then I might have to be a bit more patient! |

They do have two £20 rear Dress Circle seats showing for tomorrow on the ATG website (although only as singles).
One left for Monday 9th. Current three all together for Monday 16th (first Rachel Tucker - but I expect more will filter into the £20 band for that show).
It's definitely worth monitoring the site.

Dynamic pricing also helped me tonight - got near centre of the 5th row for only £67; bought about 30mins before showtime. Pretty sure this is a premium £150+ ticket usually.
This was incredible - thanks everyone on here for their great reviews because I probably wouldn’t have seen it if it wasn’t for the rave reviews on here!
Tom is the true highlight for me, he shone, great acting and voice. Nicole’s acting improved as the show went on, but Tom really outdid her tbh.
I’ll be thinking of the beginning of Act 2 for a while - ugh it was just so good. I really didn’t think he’d come through the side of the stalls door! Also loved the use of the screen but can understand why some wouldn’t.
So, so impressed! I already want to go again!
