As I said earlier, Petula almost ruined my love for Sunset. The score was also transposed down a lot to "fit" her voice. When you compare that to Patti (who's upper register I don't really "like" - as in find it beautiful - but still find most exhilarating), it was almost ridiculous. Anyway, give me Betty or rather Elaine any time. Goosebumps the whole evening when she was on, and a definitive Norma for me. I wish I could have seen Elaine more times. She was my first, and I've only even seen "unofficial" footage since (apart from those clips on the South Bank Show) But she was electric! |

I just watched the TikTok of Nicole doing the uber long note hold - perhaps it was recorded the night I was there, but I noticed the same crack/break midway through that is also present on my audio recording (any voice technicians can perhaps correct me on my phraseology). Is there a reason why this happens? Is it some kind of vocal correction midway, or is it a reaction in the vocal cords or a change in breath support? I'm curious as it isn't necessarily imperfect, but it certainly doesn't sound perfect. (Not a criticism, I'm more interested in the technique / lack of technique. Any experts out there?)

I saw her closing night on Broadway - electric. oh wow - another person that was there for the Broadway closing night. That was indeed an unique experience. I remember Paige being in the middle of closing night speech and there being a miscue which led to the orchestra starting to play the bows/close out, Paige shrugging and it ending somewhat anti-climactic. Not to get too off topic - I never cared for Paige's "Norma." The first time I saw her, my expectations were so high having read all the reviews from London and I found her trying to be too comedic. I get that many expect that and see the original film as a dark comedy. But after Close playing it so seriously, Buckley being so vulnerable and heart breaking - Paige, I just found myself not caring at all about Norma and found myself bored. Petula I think my expectations were so low as well that I was pleasantly surprised (maybe I was in Sunset withdraw and was just excited it was touring...) but if I had to rank them, she would be higher than Paige in my book. |

Voices usually crack when there is a lack of support behind it, they're not breathing properly to be able to get or sustain a note. So if she was used to doing a shorter note, she wasn't prepared to be able to sustain it for longer. That's usually the main reason, but it could be dehydration or not warmed up enough. |

I'm not really well-educated on vocals etc, but If I'm not mistaken, she just sharpened the note. That's almost like a signature technique for Nicole at this point, she tends to do it quite often. I believe it gives her like a rock edge to it and she's able to distort her vocals while staying on pitch and belting it out. Anyone, please do correct me if I'm wrong |

Not sure if I’ve posted this before but this is the Sunset I’d like to see now re-imaginings are in vogue. (She may not hold The Note like Sherzy but - as a life-long Judy Garland fan - I find this version v touching.)

The only Norma worse that her own was Petula's who played the role like a dotty grandma - no tension whatsoever. Then you couldn't have seen Rita Moreno as Norma, when she covered for a 3 month holiday period. She didn't have the voice for it. I saw it early on in her run and there were a few times when I giggled - there were moments when it was like watching 'Googie Gomez in Sunset Boulevard' I believe she was the only London Norma to not also play it on Broadway? If you have never seen Rita Moreno in the film 'The Ritz' I highly recommend it. "I believe she was the only London Norma to not also play it on Broadway?" I saw Moreno at the Adelphi.. I remember I had a ticket in the stalls that was 32.50 and it felt so expensive! All I remember is Rita Moreno was Norma... nothing about her performance particularly. I think Graham Bickley was Joe. But I do recall walking to a pub behind the theatre when she emerged to whoever was there and I assume someone asked her about something that happened during the show that ought not have and she replied, in a mixture of grandeur and aghast: "I didn't notice - I was acting!" And I thought: Didn't you do Love Boat too?
Anyway... today I thought Nicole Scherzinger as Mama Rose in Gypsy!

Clips from all parts of the show keep appearing on my TikTok feed, and of course I am absolutely appalled to see bootlegs, horrified and shook. I have to keep watching them over and over again, that's how terrible it is.

That’s distractingly shouty isn’t it? It didn’t sound like this in the theatre. It absolutely did when I saw in November; very shouty throughout. But I liked her a lot - she was one of the only things I personally enjoyed. But that is the performance almost identical as when I saw it. |

It's a bit like Defying Gravity, I'm happy to be shouted at when the emotions are running high, and this scene where she sort of regains her power is the place where it feels right. |

Where is the cast recording may I ask?
Sadly I am now more or less 100% convinced that it will be released at whatever point they think it will boost sales for NYC the most. Be that when tickets go on sale, when it starts previews, when it opens or at some other time the producers feel would be optimal.
Bit of a shame for a LONDON cast recording and for the UK fans but there we are I guess. (Given it's the 4 same principles I even wonder if they'll bother plastering OLC on the cover and just call it something vaguer, which would also be mildly annoying).
Problem is the buzz in the wider community dies very quickly after something closes. So there isn't much incentive to release it now.
(To echo other comments above, I also find NYC obscenely expensive. Seems to be 20 quid every time you get a coffee, sandwich and maybe something sweet and you almost need a loan for a decent hotel room. Feel ripped off the moment I step off the plane!)
