But very clever! www.instagram.com/reel/C1umG82NwL8/OK I'm not the biggest theatre fan who follows all of those actresses and nuances carefully and closely as I suspect many others do but that was friggin brilliant and I couldn't believe how spot on they were (and that I actually caught the subtleties)

I actually have an entire vision of how they should reimagine it!! And Sheridan would fit perfectly into that, come to think of it. Why don’t we have a ‘love’ button? She would be the ultimate ‘now’ Mrs J…and set it now too. I'm in two minds about setting it in current times. Intriguing, but not sure.

God yes. Fantastic score. But production wise, the descent since the early days at The Albery has been quite depressing. Hopelessly dated and cheap are the right words. (What's more depressing is despite this it seems to remain a money making machine for BKL so there's not much incentive to do something with it). Re-invent it and stick Sheridan in it I say. They'd pay £89.50 for that! I suspect they have to wait for BKL's rights to run out which could possibly happen now Bill's passed away although IIRC BKL don't have WE rights anymore so in theory someone might be able to do it. They either get rid as soon as they can, or they'll keep it forever in a tribute to Uncle Bill.

Just for curiosity, I timed the "I've come hooooooooome at last..." section from last night... Nicole held the "home" note for fourteen seconds. FOURTEEN!
I read into the elongation that Norma's desperate to prove her legitimacy and longevity. Whatever it is, it brought audible gasps and whoops on the night.

That sounds a touch self-indulgent and would harm the integrity of the song in my opinion. I appreciate that’s what they’re going for, but all this stuff which people rave about on here were the bits I especially disliked. What I enjoyed about the production was when it had a little soul to it and wasn’t doing the campy stuff.

Oh she's absolutely got self indulgent with the length of that note she's holding - people have got tubes to catch!!
Still obsessed with her tho 😂

I maintain I’m glad I saw it but it sounds like the longer the run has gone on, it has gotten even further away from the soul of the story, not closer as I’d hoped. Broadway could go either way, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the critics hated it and audiences loved it.

I read into the elongation that Norma's desperate to prove her legitimacy and longevity. Whatever it is, it brought audible gasps and whoops on the night. It’s literally astonishing. What’s even more astounding is that after the “home” that lasts forever she continues into “at last” without breathing. Like, how? Her lung capacity must be like an Olympic athlete. In other news I remembered today the melody of this bridge section in AIWNSG is identical to “time they say is relative, infinite as space….” etc in Half A Moment from Jeeves.

The way I read it, the overindulgence is deliberate. It shows Norma’s still got talent, but has perhaps fallen out of touch with what works or is appropriate. So it works on a narrative level - and on a purely surface level, it’s really impressive hearing a note held for so long. Incidentally, I’m sure Nicole didn’t hold the note for as long at the start of the run. I wonder if she’ll hit 20 seconds for the closing show tomorrow, haha!

I agree, it gets the response it sets out to get. The held note has become a bit of a cliche for Norma’s over the years. The mid-song cheering, the instant standing ovation afterwards. I believe Lloyd (via Scherzinger) is taking the piss out of this moment, just as he takes the piss out of the whole show during the title number, and by extension is taking the piss out of the audience… who lap it up by screaming and finger snapping and generally playing the fools he expects them to be.

And the rest of it is “One Hot Afternoon” from Cricket. Still never come across a full (I assume poor quality) recording of Cricket. Must be on the internet somewhere. Think pretty much all of it went into Aspects or Sunset though. (And maybe some motifs are in Amigos Para Siempre - or I might have dreamed that 🤷🏻♂️).

Who knew the power of Jamie Lloyd was so immense! Can anyone even remember the name of whoever directed Lyric Aspects….. Thank God audience at Savoy has been mercifully free of finger snapping/yes kween antics but I do certainly have the fear it could head that way and I wonder how it will be in NYC.

"Finger snapping" and "yes kween" antics is veering into 🤨 territory, have to say.

Would have been a great idea for an original piece though. A forgotten/cancelled/past it YouTuber or TikTokker in her 50’s still doing the finger snapping and “slaaaaaay” and all that business long past everyone growing out of it. Her friends are all settled down living normal lives, and they’re still on Twitch to the remaining 80 people left behind, begging for donations and avoiding debt collectors as they live beyond their means.
It just didn’t need to be Sunset Boulevard, which has a definitive setting, themes and grandeur which Lloyd set aside to fit in his vision.
