Is this an ATG or Really Useful production? Any other details on the production team - is it Soutra Gilmour designing as usual etc? ATG and Jamie Lloyd Company I would assume. Signing up for the priority mailing list has it as ATG and Lloyd Webber Harrison Musicals for who the email communications will be coming from.

Oh my God, how exciting. Was very sceptical about this "rumour" but delighted to be proven wrong. One of ALW's best scores. Queen Nicole's killer vocals. Jamie Lloyd directing*. TAKE ALL MY MONEY. (*Very much of the opinion that nothing could ever beat the Trevor Nunn original. So after a few somewhat paler imitations, it feels IMO like a good time for something totally different). Aspects of Love and Sunset Boulevard in the West End at the same time. Who'd have thunk! Just waiting for Starlight Express now.... And you think roller skates AREN'T involved in this production? Buckle up ...

So who do we reckon for Joe Gillis? I’m saying Killian Donnelly I'd say he is too old. They're going to have to go mid 20s to cast opposite Nicole and have a believable age gap. But that young doesn't really work for Joe as he should be experienced and jaded.

So who do we reckon for Joe Gillis? I’m saying Killian Donnelly I can see he’d be good. But will they decide to cast someone to equal Nicole’s looks and wider public appeal?

Also Killian has a track record of working with Jamie

If anything goes with this one then I'd quite like to see Jamie regular James Mcavoy as Joe
Paul Mascal would actually make a good Joe if he isn't busy filming.

I just don't see how you do this without Joe being like...19 if you've got Nicole as Norma.
I don't want it but I can see them casting someone like Jordan Luke Gage

I guess we also don't know whether this production will be in modern dress with hand held mics.
It really could do in any direction.

I hope they give us a few details soon, at least if this is going to be a full production or a “bare stage concert but not a concert because it’s a new vision” type of thing.

I get the whole stripped back thing for some of Lloyds other productions, but Sunset on its own is not a hugely strong show (book wise anyway) - you need a star as Norma and you need a solid production. If the whole thing is in a white box and they're all in grey, at no point will you understand she's a fading silent film star - the gimmick just won't work here. I predict Joe will be late 20s/early 30s - having a 19 year old doesnt work for obvious reasons but I just don't get how any of this is going to work.

Paul Mescal would make a good anything, quite frankly… Unless the reimagining is a gender swap? Maybe Nicole is playing Josephine Gillis, with A.N. Other as Norman Desmond?!

I agree, the setting and era are so key to the atmosphere of the story. But I just wouldn't put it past them to go fully radical.

I'm loving the minimalist design, have to say. Very well done

How do we think her attendance will be? Will there be an alternate?

Nicole is only 5 years younger than what Norma is in the show/film so age isn't really an issue plus we've seen roles cast younger before like the most recent revival of My Fair Lady where Eliza and Higgins are closer in age.

The difference is its not just about actual age, its playing age. People these days look younger, and age is part of the story in Sunset, more so than MFL.

Did Patti/Betty/Elaine/Glenn all read as too young by anyone when they played their original performances? Out of interest? (they were a very similar age to Nicole now) Or is this all about perception?! Debra Byrne who played the role opposite Hugh Jackman in Melbourne was only about 38 when she was given the role. Are we a bit too age-critical now?!

Glenn Close was only 46 when she played Norma. Nicole’s age is the last thing we should be worried about here. If they want to age her up they can, if they don’t do that it’s because it’s a creative choice not to.
