Don’t know if casting suggestions for Momma have started yet- as I need to catch up on the chat. But Anna Jane Casey! Oh and a dream version of Momma is Nicola Hughes. Sadly, during the 'Cinderella' fallout Anna Jane Casey was moved to add via tweet that ALW had shown her no interest/respect when she auditioned for him once, and that he was drunk. I can't see them ever working together. Oh wow. Really sad I missed that tweet!

I just received a pre-sale notification email. What date are they released? It doesn’t include a specific date that I could see, just they’ve sent a link out to sign up for pre-sale access. I guess you should have an email if you’re on the normal LWT mailing list.

I can't see them ever working together. I’d just assumed that it’d be Beverly Knight. Beverly Knight is busy until early June in Sister Act……and if the Theatre Goddesses are hearing me, after that I’d like her to be tied up with a transfer of Sylvia. One can dream!

They'll probably bring over Reva Rice who created Pearl to play Mama, a role she is playing in Bochum.
And I am sure Ashley is gone sadly....what is the name of the train who replaced the smoking car?

Duvay the Sleeping car (replaced Ashley in the 2012 UK tour and licensed amateur productions) or Belle the Bar Car (replaced Ashley in the 30th Anniversary Bochum production.) Depends on if they go for any new characters.

During previous runs, the performers have been to ‘skate school’ before performance rehearsals start, in order to get them up to performance level skating. I have friends who have been in various productions around the world who couldn’t skate at all before being cast.

I can’t imagine SE will get much business from those who saw it first time round Really? I think it will do fantastic business from those who saw it the first time around! The show has a huge nostalgia factor for many people, and the novelty of seeing it again will appeal to many. People will also take their kids to see it, who have never seen it before. Wether that translates into return visits to the new production remains to be seen. With modernised staging, orchestrations etc, it could be fantastic. Pricing this will be hugely important in sustaining a long run.

Starlight Express to Wembley Troubadour 2024 I looked for a thread on this or Starlight, nothing here. The theatre is perfect for Starlight, but do they want it. The expectation I think would be for an open ended run. Good call OP and others who speculated about this in the Newsies thread way back in April! The OP must have known it was happening, you don't just randomly wish a very old show with a certain theatre and then for it to happen, just by chance.
If it really was just a wish, what lotto numbers should I pick this weekend??

I just hope they do the original score. Keep Ashley , Keep Belle, Keep Only You. The Australian production staged in sports arenas and a traveling tent was stunning.

Sadly I think it will be a looooong way from this. Imagine they’ll take The Other Palace/30th Bochum version and we’ll get that slightly modified plus one new song. ALW already kinda confirmed 11 o’clock number will be I Do/Für Immer (written by his son!)

I think it's very optimistic to slate this to sell out, or even sell well, if only because of the theatre. It's an excellent venue and I'd love for it to host successful productions, but the long haul out to Wembley is a hard sell to many. That said, I'll probably make a trip (pending the prices), maybe waiting to see if it does sell or whether it goes the way of Newsies with the heavy discounts. Even as somebody who is not partial to ALW productions on the whole, this is an iconic production and one that I have to go see, even if not for the material itself. Yeah the venue puts me off tbh. Getting to London, then crossing London is a faff at the best of times but these days it's hard to rely on the transport to get you there. Will definitely wait for reviews and images/footage to see if it's worth it. I didn't see Starlight until the 3d tours of the 00s and it didn't make much of an impression.

really hope I’m proven wrong, but I cannot see this ending well. Like the recent Aspects revival, I can’t imagine SE will get much business from those who saw it first time round, and I just can’t see it striking a chord with kids and families in 2023. It’s also bound to get a drubbing from critics, whichever songs make the cut. I will however be making the trip to see it- I’ll wait for today tix offers which I am sure will be plentiful! Nonsense!

There is a nostalgia and a different kind of ‘want’ for pre-Phantom ALW than anything that came after. Its like those arena tours of six knackered 80’s pop acts singing their three hits to a crowd of misguided 50-somethings. “No Tina, Ben from Curiosity Killed The Cat has not aged well. We can’t all be John Taylor y’know!!!”.

Most shows pre Phantom still seem to sell very well even now. Anything post generally doesn't find massive audiences for revivals (or in some cases to start with). My only concern re Starlight demand is that I always think the nearest comparable show is Cats. That sold well in it's first Palladium revival but the following year kind of petered out fairly quickly. So if Cats now can't sustain even 6 months in the capital, can Starlight? I do hope so. (Should add I don't think Starlight has the challenge of people enjoying themselves once there; I think the challenge is getting them there in the first place). (Also agree with others than in the UK the location may be a challenge. No doubt people are far less willing to get to zone 3 for theatre, despite the fact that it's pretty easy, compared to the distances Germans will travel to get to Bochum! That said that marketing banner as you come out of the tube, with the Wembley arch in the background is a good start. And am sure this will be advertised all over the place so remain hopeful). Absolute key to this production will be getting a new audience whilst still pleasing the old one!

Also, this is being co produced by Michael Harrison - I can't imagine this will be particularly lavish. Don't expect the AV set - it ain't gonna be that I do certainly wonder about this. I don't think I've ever seen a lavish MH production! His Joseph was SUCH a let down compared to the 1991 RUG one. So yes, despite ALW's promises on immersiveness, I can't see an extensive AV/Bochum style set with three huge tracks on multi-levels. (Though hope I am wrong!). I image massive use of projections, video, lasers, LED screens etc etc....

People on here are obsessed with museum theatre, I don't expect the new production to like the Apollo Victoria or Bochum because technology and staging have moved on so much in 40 years.

I don't expect it to look like that and am very open to it not looking like that! Was more the point that I am slightly sceptical as to how much MH will wish to spend. And that now seemingly it is on skates, if there will be extensive tracks to skate round on - if there are, I expect them to be very different from Napier's tracks. But yeah - I believe something making full use of today's technology could be amazing :-) Though multi-level extensive physical set remains something I would enjoy seeing.

because technology and staging have moved on so much in 40 years. Well, in Bochum Mercury has certainly been in retrograde. The green laser beam from the 80s might not be as cool anymore as it was, but it was a million times better than Rusty looking like he swallowed a disco ball. That said, as long as there are skate tracks, I'm absolutely open to whatever they want to do. I think the "human factor" (performers doing amazing things on roller skates) is far more important than any overblown tech wizardry. Does the big bridge look cool? Yea. Is it necessary? Not really.

I love this description. How they somehow with all the improved technology at their disposal managed to make the sequence have so much LESS impact post 30th continues to baffle me!

I think people underestimate the affection for this show. I posted this news on my Facebook yesterday and people from all over the world (who I have met heard from in a while) are all so excited. For a lot of them, it was the first show they saw, and the memories are of such a spectacle. A lot of them have children now and have wanted to take them for ages but there hasn’t been a full English language production for eleven years (not counting the workshops or the one night in Bochum). My cousin has been wanting to take his kids for ages.
I’m not saying it will sell out, but I think it’s got a solid six months-one year in it. As others have said, the pricing will be key. Also, as I said, if they can get a Met Line train covered in Starlight logos that’d be great, even more so if they can get it to leave at the same time every day from Baker Street so it can be part of the experience, even better.
