Jessica Daley will be singing the part of Eva Peron from the side of the stage to allow tonight’s show to go ahead Eh? How’s that supposed to work? Your guess is as good as mine. We shall see I suppose

Years ago when Aaron Sidwell lost his voice for the last show of Cool Rider he went on and acted the role whilst someone else sang it offstage. Seems like this might be similar?

I've been to a couple of shows (Priscilla/ Joseph) where the set has failed so they performed it as a concert version and then also offered full refunds afterwards. I can see that as a replacement maybe, but not sure how they can give a full show with the lead character not present.

My guess: The actress playing Eva can speak the lines but not well enough to sing. Jess doesn’t know the blocking; where to stand to avoid scenery.

Oh yeah because they've Ivo Van Hovercraft-ed this it's impossible to block someone in the show in like, 3 hours, so she'll do a singin in the rain and sing into a mic in the wings.
Wild solution but fun!

I remember Marisha Wallace mentioning that during the Waitress London days (almost exactly 4 years ago actually) when Lucie+Sarah O’Connor+Olivia Moore were all ill, they actually asked Marisha to sing all of Jenna’s songs backstage as a disembodied voice/inner conscience or whatever while Leanne Pinder (the dance captain) would effectively perform the track. Marisha politely declined! And then of course they brought over Desi Oakley the next day after cancelling both Saturday performances last minute.

jess is amazing as eva so far, she stands at the podium on side stage for around half of it but it really works as it’s almost like she’s addressing the crowd. staging wise, they had an “eva” during buenos aires who didn’t even lip sync, she just danced in eva’s place as jess sang from the podium, it actually really worked. for the songs she is doing staged she is doing really well, for example the whole of new argentina was fully staged with her. the songs she isn’t in are staged as per normal, even the songs she is on the side for, they’re still fully staged with the ensemble working their way around her being on the side more.
her vocals are insane as expected.

if you haven’t seen this version of the show before, it almost could pass as the official version. it’s honestly quite fun.

When I first saw Hadestown off Broadway in 2016, Hermes had lost his voice and so he walked around the stage while writer Anaïs Mitchell performed it off stage.

Well that was insane. I have seen this show with Martha, Chumisa and now Jess.
Jess did such a great job, like i previously said she stood at the speech podium for around half of the show. The rest was staged pretty much as normal. She didn’t do any dancing but that’s expected, she only dances in one number really anyway from what i can remember and that’s Buenos Aires, for that they had Jess at the podium singing and then a normal ensemble member (I believe it was Tasmin January) do Eva’s Dance Track for her the song, in a white dress. It worked great actually, almost like she was looking back on her younger self whilst she was singing. Audience went crazy at the end, loudest audience of the 3 shows I have seen of it.
From what i heard in the foyer, yes refunds/exchanges were being offered to those who were unhappy and wanted to leave, but honestly it looked pretty full and Jess was insane so they lost out on a treat.

Awesome! Glad to hear it all worked out well! She’s a fantastic performer. Liked her ever since she did one of the BBC ALW shows (Dorothy I think?!) I know it doesn’t exactly compare to Sunset, but I am fond of this production.

I found this pretty thrilling, in parts anyways. Personally I think the comparisons to Jamie Lloyd's Sunset Blvd a little unfair - a fairer comparison would be with Lloyd's Evita in which case I think Foster wins. Buenos Aires was stunningly done and Dan Partridge's Magaldi is certainly the hunkiest I've ever seen. His voice was as muscular as his body which was a lovely surprise. I loved Art of the Possible and Peron's Latest Flame but was a little cold about You Must Love Me becoming a duet. Don't Cry For Me was unforgettable but Rainbow High was rather wonderful. Rainbow Tour and Rolling was fun as well, so it's not all amazing but I didn't think Sunset was either. I saw the understudy run on Sunday and would've liked to see Martha Kirby but must say Chumisa was great as Eva too. Gary Milner seemed too old and the chemistry between him and Evita didn't quite hit and I thought Tyrone Huntley's Che a little too charismatic and lacking the cynicism that the role requires.

Having just gotten back from seeing Tyrone’s understudy Harry chandler as che I feel like he offers a bit more of that bite that Tyrone lacks certainly in his vocals at least

Gary Milner is the right kind of age. There was a significant age gap between Peron and Eva. He was in his 50's by the time he met her. In more recent productions he is often cast younger.

How did you manage to catch the cover run? Haven't followed it too closely but Gary hasn't ever been off has he? The chemistry must be totally different, I'd be curious to hear your review of the actors. Also nothing 'unfair' about this being compared to Sunset... 2 shows with similar aesthetic treatment (at first glance) that ran concurrently, comparisons will be drawn!

Sadly as said before I loathed this, but Gary Milner was fine and my favourite of the three in terms of performance.
He was absolutely hilarious in the Grandage production as Magaldi, so he has some Evita history.

Saw it tonight … final show … loved Peron … the Company did well … lots of energy and emotion as you’d expect. No fault of theirs but I didn’t like Eva without a blonde wig/white dress for Don’t cry for me … maybe I’m too much of a traditionalist …
