Stunning mainstage production at The Abbey with a beautiful ensemble led by Brendan Coyle. A gorgeous and deeply moving treat. It's worthy of a transfer - is it long since the Donmar brought it to Wyndhams?

Saw this in previews and it was in good shape. It is a great play and when it's done well those monolougues are extremely engrossing. I had some issues with the staging/set, perhaps there have been changes to this since I saw it. I prefered how that was all done in the 2014 London production.
Special nod to Marty Rea who plays Jim, one of the best stage actors I have ever seen, it's beyond me how he has not done more international work or film. Perhaps he prefers the Dublin stage/Irish tours. I think he's one of the core Druid Theatre actors. It seems there's no genre or charater type he can't do.

Such stage presence. He was superb in Beginning by David Eldridge at the Gate Theatre. Such a shame that no-one outside of Ireland has heard of him.

Wasn’t Brendan Coyle in the original London production back in ‘98/99 was it? Someone here will know.

Oh Yes, I'd forgotten about The Beginning, he was excellent in that, never seen him be anything other excellent. Brendan Coyle was in the orignal production playing Brendan the barman. I saw a good few photos of him in that production on twitter when the show opened in Dublin last month. People were doing a photo comparsion of 'then and now'. I saw that Jim Norton was in that orignal cast, best known as Bishop Len Brennan from 'Father Ted', but an experienced stage actor. I saw him as the judge this year in 'To Kill a Mockingbird'. Anyway, there's a nice photo of Meryl Streep with the original Weir cast backstage on twitter, sorry I'm not sure how to post it here, i'm not even sure if I can post it here, copyright etc.

It really is a big challenge to put such an intimate play on such a big stage and I thought it a very clever solution. Easier for me as I had a great seat on the right directly opposite the bar and only a few rows back so it was almost like seeing it in The Peacock for me. If it transferred to a smaller house like The Ambassadors it would become more intimate and they could lose most of the car park. The live musicians may not also survive the economics of a commercial transfer. Early reviews said they distracted from the action but that seemed to be resolved when I saw it a few weeks in.

I saw the original production which won the Olivier that year. I was on the panel and met Brendan Coyle at the event. He was nominated for best supporting I think. Honours that year went to Kevin Spacey for best actor, The Iceman Cometh in which he was truly astounding. I chatted to him too. He was very nice.

Brendan Coyle is as fab now as the older Jack as he was as Brendan all those years ago. It must be intimidating for Sean Fox who's playing Brendan now but his performance is just lovely too.

I saw the version at the Donmar with Brian Cox, Dervla Kirwan and Ardal O’Hanlon but can remember next to nothing about it; thought it was ok rather than anything amazing though.

Now fully sold out for the rest of the run, so no much longed for second visit for me.

Now fully sold out for the rest of the run, so no much longed for second visit for me. I saw that, I will be in Dublin on Saturday and would have loved to have popped in for a 2nd viewing. I also see that Piaf in the Gate is sold out, so no Dublin theatre fix for me for now.

I'd keep checking - single seat returns sometimes pop up on the seating chart.
