If you told me that all the actors had learnt their parts and rehearsed in isolation and never met before the performance then I think I might actually have believed you. You're so right about the flaws in Herrin's direction and the lack of cast chemistry. It's still not quite as bad as his version of The Glass Menagerie, where not only did the actors playing the Wingfields lack chemistry, but they were also all doing American accents from totally different parts of the country, including the actors playing young Tom and older Tom, who sounded nothing alike.

The issue with this is Jeremy Herrin has largely not directed anything well since People Places and Things (although I have to admit I enjoyed best of Enemies but that's likely due to James Graham script).
He's got fantastic actors who has a great script, but they've been given absolutely no guidance as to what to do with it, and as a result they feel like they're appearing in four different productions of the same play, at the same time. If youd told me they hadn't met until tonight to rehearse the play, I'd believe you.
3 stars from me - Cox and Clarkson are good, the sons both ok, and Louisa Hartland is good, but this never took off because it's woefully directed.

He's hit and miss. As you say, PP&T is superb, as was This House, but his production of The Glass Menagerie bored me to tears. I was sorry to have missed 'A Mirror' twice.

I always felt he was a good ensemble director. Always got the best out of his cast members. His best was Wolf Hall/Bring up the Bodies, This House, The Nether, People, Places and Things, Uncle Vanya with Roger Allam, Much Ado About Nothing with Eve Best and Charles Edwards.
Also enjoyed Best of Enemies, All my Sons at the Old Vic and The House They Grew Up In at Chichester.
But haven't enjoyed his recent work such as Ulster American and A Mirror.

You didn’t miss anything not seeing A Mirror. Boring twaddle. I was stunned it got a transfer. Herrin has definitely lost his way in recent years though. How long can you coast on past successes?
