You either enjoy this sort of children's fantasy tale or you don't. Because I am in the latter category, I had avoided this at the National and on transfer. However, a cancelled Hex, and second-row stalls seats for £39.50, persuaded me to give it a chance.
Sadly, my original assessment was sound. This was not a show for me, and I struggled to get much from it. There are no metaphors or allegories here; it is pure fantasy. There's nothing wrong with that. If that is your bag, you will enjoy this immensely.
I rated highly Nicolas Tennant as the father, Penny Layden as Old Mrs Hempstock, Laura Rogers as Ursula, and I thought Grace Hogg-Robinson was excellent as Sis, convincingly portraying a character we know to be younger than her twelve-year-old brother.
The two leads were curiously attired, the brother in his rainbow-laced Converse, and Lettie Hempstock in her red, retro Kickers, and their performances felt too old for me.
Where this production scores is on its soundtrack, its set design, and on its stage effects, which are, by turns, magical, terrifying and stunning. The stage movement and scene transitions are also beautifully realised. For these reasons, and the quality of some of the performances, the production is lifted to three-star status, but I can see why fans of the genre have given this top ratings.

We went to this afternoon's show. A couple of months ago there had been a promo for front row stalls for 25 and they were pretty good seats. Very much a spectacle without a huge amount of story to back it up but engaging performances, good set pieces(*) and a few nice moments along the way.
*Took a second to realise the guy who walked on stage in all black was not part of the cast but stage manager (or similar) and was calling a stop to the show. The waves should have, I guess, come down on wires through the house but they had snagged on something. Lights had to come back on but the show was back within 2-3 minutes.
Quite a large round of applause going on from behind the set even after the audience was starting to move out. I didn't spot an understudy change (but easily could have missed it) so maybe just grateful to be able to do a show in times like this.

Thoroughly enjoyed this last night. For anyone who hasn't been yet they are doing £10 tickets through the weekly release NT Friday rush and we got fantastic seats in row L of the stalls. Any West End show for a tenner is a bargain, but it certainly makes it all the more worthwhile to see something of this quality.
Visually it is stunning, and despite a slow first 15 minutes or so, after this I really got into it and it just flew by. I hadn't read the book or anything about the story but found it pretty easy to follow. Highly Recommend.

I would like to ask anybody know policy about publishing / share dates when covers are (in advance)? is there a chance to know it earlier? or rather, does someone associate when offical / usually cover ends with their run. I remember from some play in the past up to 2 weeks before closing. (without random events ( main is sick or sm) I can't hide that I would like to see a specific actor (in the main role, however, he is 1st cover of Boy) and I would rather try when there is a mim chance.

There are some Twitter accounts who publish when understudies and covers are going to be on, generally it's for that day's performance unless they know the performer will be covering a whole week's shows.

i know . WestEnd Understudies do "devil" work , esp with cov*d time. They only find out when they' ve been sent a cast board ( already ask ) .

Stagebyte - I saw it from row E in the stalls and it was an excellent view. I sat three seats in from the side aisle. The box office staff told me that the aisle seat had a slightly restricted view so please bear that in mind. I got a day seat for £25.

does anyone know where they friday rush ticket are locate? .. I monitored prices (yes, I couldn't buy on today tix when sale were cause a. problem with paymant and later I can't buy a single ticket in the promotion soo)
I noticed that they no longer drop" tickets in the first rows of £ 25 from upcoming week (usually on Fridays). Ticket rush is ok but i worry they will be sold out ( no look with it)

I got great seats in row L stalls through Friday rush, although I don’t think the allocation is as good on the weekends (I went on a Thursday)

thnak you! I need caught on friday show soo yeah. i prefer week performance but friend of mine can go only on friday .. i see this friday will be lottery for two weeks of performances < lovely ironic> my only winning in friday rush was 4 year ago  |

I got a dayseat on Sunday through TodayTix for £25. It said all tickets were held, but tried a couple more times and got second row of the stalls.

As tourist tr by todaytix app and card payment.. after conf at my bank website they say back at app/website confimed at app disappears.. when i did it at my compute everything was fine.. I went last night and found it completely engrossing. I'm not familiar with the story (although I'll probably be rectifying this shortly) so didn't realize it's as dark/serious as it is. (The marketing focuses on the magic, imagination and staging [which is wonderful], but it actually is more than that.)
One good thing about still wearing a mask in the theater... it absorbed the tears so I only had to dab rather than mop.

Took in the matinee this afternoon and thought it was rather lovely. I’ve loved the poster since it first went up but actively dislike children, puppetry and fantasy, so this had some work to do to win me over!
James Bamfield was exceptional as Boy but the entire cast were great. I found the puppetry really quite beautiful, especially the underwater scene which was so joyous and very touching.
It’s a real theatrical experience and I’m so pleased I managed to catch it before it closed. Theatre was very busy!

I think this is a great production. Really glad I saw it. The rush tickets in Stalls row L are a real bargain for £10. Really good view from there

This replaces the previously announced production of Wendy and Peter Pan at The Lowry, seen last Christmas at Leeds Playhouse.
