Don’t forget, they want you talking about this. Not poverty or how the rich are getting richer. Publishers have always changed and updated old books, as things in society change. This is actually a non story. But it suits the rich people in this country to stir things up and get rid of all “nuance” so that people get angry about this, rather than how they are hiding their wealth abroad.

The Effect from 2013 was pretty good I thought, but The Father and the Assassin from 2022 was so-so. Surprised that these are being revived rather than promoting new work or new versions of classics. Was there a huge unfulfilled demand for these shows?

I think these announcements are very disappointing. The NT have been doing the odd musical for decades but in twelve months we'll have had Hex, Sky's Edge, The Witches and Strange Loop (albeit at The Barbican).
Two returning newish plays. Why aren't the NT doing a few more classics? They've not done Uncle Vanya in 30 years, for example.
I'm not sure this is what the subsidy given to the NT is about. It should be a balance of new writing and classics with the occasional musical.

Last year they had quite a few classic revivals so having more modern classics isn't a bad thing. It's a bit snobby to suggest the NT shouldn't have musicals. |

One issue for me is that they only seem to be using the Dorfman for new writing whereas it would be good for some classic revivals: there are some plays that merit a Dorfman-sized production rather than a Lyttelton-sized one. It might be hard to fill the Lyttelton with a revival of a Schiller, Pirandello, Lope de Vega or Marivaux, but the right production would be excellent in the Dorfman, as used to happen in the Cottesloe. |

I don't actually regard Friel as a "classic" but that's me. I also didn't say they shouldn't have musicals. They've been doing them for 40 years since Guys & Dolls. Oklahoma was fabulous, Candide was stunning, Night Music was great, Follies was exceptional. Sky's Edge for me was so-so and I hated Hex. I think two a year is plenty, not four.
