Golly, I am surprised this is being revived. Perhaps they have a very different take on it, but IMO the one at the Young Vic, despite the many talented people involved, was almost unwatchable. The person who I took to see it and I often use it as a measure when describing other productions (i.e., 'It was bad, but not Song from Far Away bad.') Peraps Stephens or Young have a huge Manchester fan base to make it viable?

I love Mark Eitzel's music but remember finding the Young Vic production a bit of a slog.

I was sure the email said the public sale for Song From Far Away started at 14:00 today, but I was able to buy tickets 10 minutes ago. Was I mistaken about the start time?

Caught this last night.
I live within about a 20-25 min walk from the theatre.
It's a one man show- Will Young presenting a monologue. He sings one short song.
The premise is that he's a young gay man living in New York and he gets the phone call to come home to Amsterdam as his brother has just passed away.
So the show deals with a lit of emotion; briefly about the characters sexuality but how to deal with loss and grief, expressing oneself, his relationship with his parents and his sister's family (all not seen)
Will Young has gained a little weight which, in my opinion, he looks better for.
He's very good and quickly shift emotions.
Despite delivering a set text, last night when someone in the audience sneezed, he said 'Bless you' and carried on.
Last night I got a free seat upgrade to Row B. He got a standing ovation.
Running time: Started pretty much on time at 7:30, lights up at 8:45. No interval.

The monologue from Willem, who emigrated from Amsterdam to New York City several years ago, discusses a return visit necessitated by a family bereavement. His observations, sharply crafted by Simon Stephens, reminded me of the wry, sardonic humour of David Sedaris on Radio Four. But, while the latter's weariness and exasperation with others is good-natured, Willem's bitterness is palpable, and shocking at times.
Will Young does an excellent job of not making Willem a villain; he's interesting, you sense how he's come to be, and you're mainly on-side. Some of the catty one-liners are rather amusing in fact, but the Hampstead crowd tonight was far too polite to laugh out loud.
The set and lighting jarred for my husband, but I thought them pitch perfect. The running time flew past.
I liked this a lot.
Four stars.
