Definitely the right winner, but sadly I found the final strangely flat. Probably the lack of practice time.

I'm calling it now, I think David will win! It's the kind of upset that often happens and I feel like Peter (who IMO would be the rightful winner) peaked a week early and had an exceptional week. I also thought the wrong person went and I really don't like how they don't take previous weeks into consideration. It leads to what's happened this time, someone who has had quite a few disasters making it to the final because there was always someone worse and someone who has been great throughout having one bad week and going because there are no longer enough people to mitigate the damage. But as Mary Berry says, it's only a cake! I'm very happy to have called it incorrectly! Yes a well deserved winner, although it was very close between the top two on the day.

Definitely the right winner, but sadly I found the final strangely flat. Probably the lack of practice time. Perhaps it was over baked? Went from puffed up to puffed out? 😉😅 (I'll see myself out)

I'm really glad that he won, my partner and I both cheered when his name was called! I just felt Laura have up to be honest. She had a mare of a final, especially with the custard slices! Great bakers for the final, but happy with the result 😊. I can't believe he was just going through Uni and living with friends without any of them knowing he'd won though haha, that was brilliant!

Looks like we are getting two festive specials. With Tom Allen rather than Noel who was on paternity leave

Oh, I like Tom Allen.
(To be clear, though, none of the C4 presenters have been a patch on Mel&Sue)

Lovely moment on Extra Slice when Dave proposed to his girlfriend. Very sweet.

Anyone watch it this year?
I think the standard of the showstoppers in the final is absolute proof that they are setting the bakers up to fail by not giving them enough time.
And giving them vegetable gelatine without instructions was just mean!

Anyone watch it this year? We started but lost interest early on, though we've enjoyed previous seasons. We've dipped in a couple of times since and watched some of the final tonight for old times' sake but this series just felt flat. A revamp next year with a new team, maybe, and recipes that look more tempting and involve baking? We caught some old episodes on the food channel and they were so much better, more informative etc.

The bakers are all still lovely, but the actual challenges and the judges just get more and more ridiculous.
It’s meant to be a home baking show - they’re still only using ‘home baking’ equipment - but the stuff they need to do and the time they get to do it in is more like the Professional version. Give them a blast chiller each and maybe the stuff will actually set, or give them 3 hours to let it chill

The time frame for each challenge is the reason I have stopped trying to get on the show.
They don't want people to succeed. And I don't like to be set up to fail.

I thought it was a really weak final in terms of quality of product. That orangutan face was something I’d expect to see on junior bake off.

Even a basic summer pudding needs at least three hours to set, never mind one with a set jelly and meringues and cream mousse inside it. Nobody could've done that well in the allotted time. Time for a major revamp. I'd bring the Junior Bake Off presenting team onto the adult show. They're much more fun.

It’s been a case of diminishing returns for quite a few years I’m afraid. What was a fun, quirky BBC2 show just feels like any other reality show now. With it being so formatted it can feel like you’ve seen everything before, because you have, every episode.

The first half of the final was miles better with Noel not being there.
I don't think the bakers were at fault for the quality of the final. It was all down to the excessively demanding challenges with not enough time.
I have thoroughly enjoyed the Australian version as that feels more realistic and supportive. They give far more instruction for the technicals for instance.
However they have dumped the judges and the hosts for next year so am wary of how that will affect things. Particularly as Rachel Khoo is one of the judges and I cannot stand her on screen.

I don't think the bakers were at fault for the quality of the final. It was all down to the excessively demanding challenges with not enough time. Remember back in the early series, when we’d see the bakers sitting with a cup of tea while their bakes were in the oven? Now they’re working on two other elements at least during the baking time. It looks so stressful! I don’t watch Bake Off for stressful.

It was rubbish this year. Nothing worked, casting was poor, challenges insane and Presenters jokes fell flat. I want to see people bake brilliant cakes that look amazing, with presenters that like cake and the contestants and judges who are not rude to older women.

I would like to see more baking and no more constructions. Who would eat some of the glued together stuff they have to present? What about wedding cakes or simpler bakes done to perfection? And yes, leave out the funnies which they seem to out in everything, the pottery show, the jewellery show and this. Let the humour emerge naturally from the personalities in the competition. There was plenty of humour in the bakers this year without the false humour added. This said, i liked the winner who has plenty to offer future tv but please no blue peter style stuck in the air stuff.

Agree with all that's been said. I was sad my favourite went out last week, I hadn't much interest in the final, but the show has lost its way. Not just the old fashioned cake baking, there used to be savoury pies and pastries but I guess, with it being TV, it's more about the look of the thing to present to viewing audiences the producers think works, rather than have someone tell you how good it tastes or smells. And although I do love Noel, and like Matt, the "comedy" falls flat every single time unless it is one of the contestants giving a throw-away remark. The set-up comedy is dire. It should be a lovely hour and a bit of comfort watching, not edge of your seat waiting for tears drama.

Agree not just great cakes but the savouries too. My favourite challenge ever was the hand raised pie crust. Something I’d never do myself but was fascinating to watch.
