It absolutely blows my mind that somebody wouldn’t like Rufus’ voice, but completely get how subjective this is. It’s just he’s pretty much my favourite voice on the planet, and I adore his songwriting so much, and how lush and orchestral his music can be. So I’m thrilled to be seeing this, and can’t wait even if just to hear the music… I think he’s extraordinary. And whenever I’ve seen Sheridan in anything I’ve been super impressed, especially her acting through song. Super pumped for this.

I don't know the film but the plot (washed up alcoholic actress haunted by ghost of a dead fan while attempting a comeback) sounds like Sunset Boulevard meets All About Eve. Could be a triumph or a complete disaster. It'll be interesting to see who else gets cast in the supporting roles.

I thought about booking this but I've booked a lot of theatre recently so would only go for the cheapest seats which are all restricted view. Given Ivo van Hove's penchant for live video - this being an adaptation of a film practically guarantees he'll be up to his old tricks - and little regard for sightlines, I'm just going to hope there's rush/lottery once performances actually start (or it'll be bad and I won't have missed out at all but for those who've booked's sake hopefully not).

As others have said, very pleasantly surprised by the ticket prices. I got a mid Row F stalls ticket for £85.
If this was at an ATG venue, most of the stalls would probably be off sale at this early stage and the prices would be around £125.

There's been a DMT+ presale since 8am or so this morning. Although sounds like it was open for booking regardless. Did any DMT+ members get any emails about this at all? I didn't. I only learnt it was already on public sale from WhatsOnStage, never mind any members' presale.

Although when I clicked into it, I was able to view availability and add seats without signing in, so I suspect I'd have been able to checkout as a nonmember.

I only learnt it was already on public sale from WhatsOnStage, never mind any members' presale. Email about 8am, which I didn’t see until around 9:30am. No advance warning, or indication when the presale would end. Then I saw the public sale would start at 10am, so I did check the link at 9:50am, but was in the middle of work things so didn’t book. I suspect this will sell well, but I’ll wait. To be frank, a secret two hour pre-sale just when people are starting work is like paying lip service to the DMT+ membership. Most people won’t have had time to see the email, check when they can attend, or (if they’re those strange people who arrange theatre attendance with others) check if people can attend with them.

Thanks Dr Tom and n1david - I've emailed asking DMT+ why I wasn't on their presale mailing list.

Agreed. I suspect Sheridan Smith's involvement will ensure this is another Educating Rita and not one to wait for discounts. DMT makes it very quick and easy to scroll through dates and choose seats compared to the likes of ATG. Do you mean Shirley Valentine? Indeed, sorry. A bit of of Willie confusion on my part there. I decided not to book Shirley Valentine when it first went on sale and ended up not seeing it at all.

I imagine this will sell very well indeed, though it's a little more niche and avant-garde than Shirley Valentine so is unlikely to have quite the same commercial appeal.

Yes, it's MUCH more niche source material, with a plot that I highly doubt will fully utilise Sheridan Smith's superlative comedy skills. Still, I thought she was wonderful dramatically in "Flare Path," in particular, and she's so good at being vulnerable and evoking identification and empathy, and I, for one, thought she sang the heck out of "Funny Girl." The niche plot is very Ivo Van Hove, bearing some similarities to "Persona," which he's already done, where one woman's personality blurs with another's, in this case, a character in a play that she's doing. With Rufus Wainwright in the mix, this feels like particularly complex cerebral adult material, with only Smith providing a mainstream emotional connection to audiences. But I'm betting she can do just that. I'm really intrigued, but I'd hold off predicting a mainstream hit till I saw it lol.

I booked a couple early preview dates yesterday and was pretty surprised by how relatively cheap tickets are for this one. I had been hoping Ivo would ditch the cameras and screens and (especially now that it would be immediately compared to “Sunset”), I’m just curious if the lower prices could reflect a more stripped back production. I honestly think I paid less to see “Shirley Valentine” from comparable front DC seats, which is odd.

They certainly aren’t the decent seats.

I've just received news of this, an adaptation of the John Cassavetes film, Rufus Wainwright providing the lyrics and music. 6th March to 27th July at the Gielgud. Ad on YouTube: .
